GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), a private, four-year college of art and design founded in 1885. Reporting to the President of KCAI, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) must bring visionary fundraising leadership marked by a solid track record of increasing philanthropic support, the purposeful expansion and diversification of philanthropic revenue, extensive campaign and leadership experience, and success in soliciting and achieving significant gifts. The VPIA will possess the leadership acumen to leverage existing capacity and strengthen performance, effectively manage and build the comprehensive operation, while maintaining best practices, collegiality and shared accountability with clearly defined goals.
This position serves as a key member of the leadership team, the Cabinet. The candidate will actively collaborate with the President, the Board of Trustees and Cabinet to define and implement an overarching advancement strategy that aligns with the annual budget and institutional priorities. In accomplishing these goals, the Vice President will develop and maintain relationships with donors, alumni, foundations, and the community at large. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships that build KCAI’s visibility, impact, and financial stability via fundraising.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and execute an annual fundraising plan including, but not limited to, grants, sponsorships, annual appeals, alumni support, events, and programs.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with new and existing donors, supporters, community partners, corporate partners and devise strategies for engagement and support.
• Manage a diversified portfolio of major gift donors for the college.
• Work closely with the President to coordinate donor meetings, determine next steps and stewardship.
• Liaison for board level committees relevant to advancement, collaborate with committee chairs on agendas and fundraising initiatives based on college priorities.
• Oversee the endowment including new fund agreements, manage 125 individual funds for cultivation and stewardship, ensure proper distribution of funds and timely reporting.
• Manage the gift processes and procedures for the college including gift acceptance policies.
• Supervise a team of full-time fundraisers including the Center for Professional Practice, Sponsored Studio and corporate programs, alumni relations, special events, membership, grants and foundations, annual fund, and the database; determine fundraising goals for team and individuals.
• Review all grant proposals and reports.
• Oversee successful biennial fundraising events.
• Build positive working relationships and facilitate support from internal constituents.
• Understand, anticipate, and adapt to developing organizational needs.
• Perform other duties relevant to the role as assigned.
• The Vice President will manage a mid-sized advancement staff and serve as the chief development officer of the college, providing leadership for securing the support essential to fulfilling KCAI’s mission. This position is responsible for the management of all fundraising endeavors such as annual fund, the endowment, capital needs, and planned gifts.

REQUIRED/PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Proven record of success in securing major gifts from corporations, individuals and foundations, and/or implementing a range of fundraising activities, including special events, proposal submissions, and individual solicitations.
• Established track record in managing institutional development, including major gift solicitation, planned giving, events planning and targeted drives for corporate and foundation donations and sponsorships.
• High level of comfort and sensitivity in diverse settings and ability to communicate with and harness energies from a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including: board members, public officials, business executives, faculty, staff, students and alumni representing varied cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
• Broad understanding of and commitment to success in college advancement within the context of urban public higher education and an extensive record of achievement as a fundraiser.
• Excellent writer with a track record of writing grant-winning proposals and compelling cases for support and solicitation materials.
• Understanding of development-specific technology to assess and improve systems and processes to further advancement goals.
• Ability to take appreciate mission-centric work; take initiative and effectively navigate the role in higher education and non-profit environment.
• Entrepreneurial, innovative, creative and leadership approach to fundraising, while demonstrating agility, transparency and political astuteness.
• Possess tenacity, fortitude, courage, sense of humor and a results-oriented approach to leading the advancement program, supervising and motivating staff
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and able to manage multiple deadlines and priorities with timely follow-up and completion of duties.

REQUIRED/PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
• Seven years of relevant work experience in development with management experience
• Previous work experience in higher education is preferred but not required.
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE preferred.
