Description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Communications Strategist will work to develop content and implement strategies in social and traditional media to advance the organization’s advocacy and branding objectives.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Traditional
  • Write and produce media assets of all types:  issue briefs, press releases, op-eds, development, and marketing materials
  • Strategize with team leaders to best present policy information, study findings, and advocacy in ways that parallel the HRF brand
  • Work across departments to coordinate press availabilities and events
  • Polish press releases, reports, and other public facing documents emanating from other program teams
Digital
  • Oversee digital properties to advance Human Rights First’s branding and advocacy goals
  • Work with communications team and program leaders to implement social media strategy
    • Prepare written content, develop graphics, and manage posting to HRF’s Twitter and Facebook accounts
    • Develop and execute targeted online ads on Facebook, Twitter, and Google
    • Maintain schedule of social media engagements
    • Track and report on performance analytics for digital content
  • Create and post blogs, resources, and other content on the website
  • Write emails, petitions, and actions for supporter list
    • Use Quorum database to configure, test, schedule, and send petitions, action alerts, email messages, registration forms, and event invites
    • Edit, test, and send development emails
Administrative
  • Manage the communications calendar
  • Maintain press contacts and relationships with journalists; manage press lists
  • Manage communications associates as they come online, and vendor partners as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, international relations, or other related field preferred and 4+ years’ relevant professional experience
  • Understanding of best practices in communications, media design, and issue advocacy
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, good press judgement
  • Traditional and digital media savvy
  • Ability to synthesize complex information in meaningful ways for distribution to a variety of audiences
  • Familiarity with Quorum, eCRM databases, and email platforms; basic familiarity with HTML and web editing, Adobe Suite and/or InDesign
  • Organized and creative thinker with ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, accept new challenges, and work successfully across organization lines and with a diverse team of colleagues
  • Growth mindset, an ability to work independently, and a rigorous attention to detail
  • Interest in defending human rights in America and around the world
