Family & Child Empowerment Services (FACES) SF provides families who live and work in San Francisco with high-quality early childhood education and enrichment; job support, training, and placement; and comprehensive family support services and referrals. Our mission is to empower families who live and work in San Francisco to transform their futures through holistic educational and economic opportunities.

In partnership with our local neighborhoods, FACES SF provides support to working families citywide, with a focus in the Bayview Hunters Point, Haight Ashbury, Western Addition, Visitacion Valley, and Bayview Hunters Point neighborhoods. We also manage a network of nearly 40 home-based childcare providers located primarily in Southeast San Francisco. Over 80% of the families we serve survive beneath the Extremely Low-Income Line in San Francisco as determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of young children and families in San Francisco?  Are you a great storyteller and an experienced and passionate fundraiser who loves to build?

The VP of Advancement works closely with the CEO to create and implement a bold advancement plan for short and long term financial organizational growth and sustainability.  The ideal candidate is a dynamic, media-savvy storyteller who can develop and implement fundraising, branding, and communications strategies that increase the impact of FACES’ programs, both within and beyond the San Francisco community.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The VP of Advancement reports directly to FACES SF’s new CEO, Jon Skolnick, and is a member of the senior leadership team, which meets weekly. This position manages one staff member currently, but they will be responsible for growing the team significantly over the next several years. The position works closely with the Board and other volunteers.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive and diversified fund development program to achieve aspirational contributed revenue goals.
  • Manage, nurture, and grow advancement team, including providing mentorship and training opportunities as appropriate.
  • Identify new funding opportunities through government and foundation grants, and work with colleagues in programmatic areas to apply for funding through these opportunities.
  • Lead and support the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual major gifts, and work closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors, and volunteers to advance their solicitations.
  • Work closely with CEO and other senior staff to create brand appropriate messaging for print, email, digital, and social media.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors/prospects for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors’ External Relations Committee, effectively collaborating with and engaging its members in support of the agency’s development goals.
  • Develop and launch a robust planned giving program.
  • Create a culture of philanthropy, leading by example.
  • Assure that a comprehensive accounting, transmittal, and acknowledgement process for all donations including donor records and recognition, is created and maintained.
  • Work collaboratively with the Finance Department in the monthly reconciliation of donations and grants, creation of the annual budget, and the development of budgets for grant requests.
  • Keep current on tax laws and other IRS rulings which affect charitable giving.
  • Champion best practices in the nonprofit and fundraising fields in the performance of duties.
  • Enthusiastically represent the agency to outside professional organizations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten plus years of experience as a seasoned leader with nonprofit or social impact fundraising experience; local Bay Area fundraising experience preferred
  • Experience building a development strategy that thoughtfully blends branding, marketing, and fundraising to achieve big organizational goals
  • Strong knowledge base around — and fundamental adherence to — the principles, ethics, tools, networks, and best practices of equitable and impact-driven fundraising, including the strategic cultivation and integration of governmental, foundation, corporate, and individual funders
  • Highly proficient communication skills, including social media, large-group in-person and virtual presentations, donor and other stakeholder decks, all-staff trainings, and effective 1:1 and team communication
  • Strong alignment with and commitment to FACES SF’s mission and values; and a willingness to joyfully and humbly reflect and grow in pursuit of that mission
  • CFRE, or other fundraising certifications valued
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, marketing and communications skills
  • Strong experience with design and implementation of identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and techniques
  • Advanced strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical and persuasion/negotiation skills
  • Exceptional capacity for creative, independent, and critical thought, and an appreciation for complexity and nuance
  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as with a team
  • Proven ability to partner with and support program leaders throughout an organization, as well as with other members of senior management and the Board of Directors
  • A high degree of self-awareness, a spirit of curiosity, and a sense of humor
  • Reliable, excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Competence with technology including Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, and CRMs, working knowledge of Salesforce preferred
  • Able to work well under pressure, with good judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Working understanding of highly confidential environments and ability to maintain confidentiality

SALARY OR SALARY RANGE

The salary range for this position is $140,000 to $155,000 plus 100% healthcare coverage for employee, 25% for family/partners, and a 7% employer match for a 403(b)-retirement plan. New employees start with three weeks of vacation, ten sick days, and an additional paid vacation between Christmas and New Year’s.
