2021 was a landmark year in Tides’ 45-year history. The Role:

The Senior Director of Strategy and Impact reports directly to the Chief Impact Officer (CIO) and works collaboratively with a variety of organizational leads.  The Senior Director of Strategy and Impact is responsible for the implementation of the strategic plan and measurement of the organization’s impact. The role provides strategic input and advice to the CIO to assist in the development of organizational priorities, decision making and problem solving as it relates to the strategic plan and progress toward the impact goal. The role provides oversight of the rollout of Tides impact goal across the organization and plays a critical role in the build out and execution of the growth strategy. The role is responsible for the development and execution of an engagement strategy that socializes and educates the Tides staff on the new strategic plan. The role will advance collective accountability through the development of well-defined shared goals and is responsible for the design and execution of an impact measurement framework and dashboard in alignment with the organization’s desired impact.

What you will do:

Strategy & Impact Leadership 

  • Drive execution of projects with the CIO, Executive Team, Strategy & Impact Committee, staff, partners, and partner constituents with a goal of assessing, and managing effective strategic initiatives that achieve impact model outcomes across Tides functional and issue areas.
  • Collaborate with CIO and organizational leads in providing clarity on impact is in each work stream and develop impact metrics in line with the impact goal.
  • Lead and manage the effective monitoring and reporting of organizational performance against the impact goal; champion, develop, and socialize effective performance management process.
  • Operational Excellence: Create and implement effective office processes, procedures, and protocols to seamlessly integrate into the larger Tides organization into Strategy and Impact work and thinking.
  • In partnership with the Chief Impact Officer, support the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Team with rapid evaluation of new ideas or opportunities when they arise and support the execution of the evaluation process.
  • Lead the development of shared governance, policies, practices, and decision rights to support transformational change across Tides.
  • Embrace JEDI values and ensure they are integrated and reflected in the development of an impact measurement framework.
  • Provide leadership and coaching to organizational leads to ensure alignment with the strategy and impact priorities.
  • Support efforts to build operational excellence into all areas of the organization.
  • Lead the development of an analytics culture that practices data-based decision making.
  • Provide strategic input and thought partnership for high level priorities that will drive impact against the impact outcomes.
  • Analyze market trends and intelligence to develop best practices and systems to create and maintain a strong framework and practice for measuring impact.
  • Ensure close alignment of thought leadership with marketing efforts in alignment with overall strategy and impact priorities.
  • Direct and support the work of an external consulting partner(s) to synthesize organization inputs to assess Tides market position and outline major untapped opportunities for the future including prioritizing the path to greatest impact; clearly articulate the resources, metrics, capabilities, and governance structures needed to execute on the impact goal.
  • Conceptualize, design, execution, analysis, writing, presentation of research results across the organization.
  • Centralize our competitive intelligence - partner with data and analytics and other practice area teams to track and report competitive intelligence.
  • Develop landscape analysis to inform work and identify opportunities for Tides to pursue proactively.
  • Develop quantitative modeling approaches and work with team members to develop analytical models to inform key decisions.
  • Directly and indirectly manage cross organizational leads to develop and socialize goals while mentoring them to adopt a shared accountability mindset.
  • Work directly with organization subject matter experts to determine impact goals and milestones for leaders and drive completion of cross-team projects.
  • Develop and operationalize a glossary of shared definitions of key operational terms.

What you will bring:

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience in nonprofit strategy and human rights.
  • Strong familiarity of Tides Network, culture and values and a heartfelt commitment to Tides future and impact.
  • Commitment to JEDI values and ability to integrate throughout work.
  • Demonstrated experience in change management and operational excellence; Ability to advance strategic organizational change and lead large scale program and project management initiatives, balancing risks, pacing for success, and supporting team wellness.
  • Proven track record of using data to inform decisions.
  • Experience in staff engagement, results management, and monitoring.
  • Proven ability to drive process improvements and demonstrated performance in developing new and enhancing business approaches that support organizational stability.
  • A strong collaborative work ethic: approachability to offer help or expertise to colleagues; proven ability to work across organizational barriers or silos.
  • Experience managing expectations of multiple stakeholders with competing priorities and timelines.
  • Experience working in a collaborative capacity and the ability to influence.
  • Proven track record in delivering complex projects using multiple sources of qualitative and quantitative data to make recommendations and drive decisions.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills (phone, email, and in-person) at all levels, with significant experience framing communications for executive audiences.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire teams to make a big impact and provide leadership and direction while managing complexity and/or uncertainty.
