SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

The Director of Major Gifts has primary responsibility for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and retaining major donor relationships and estate gifts. The position provides the expertise to advance SRM’s interests through research, identification of potential major gifts, and estate gifts. Once identified, the Director of Major Gifts works to get the right communication to the right donor at the right time in the right way to build dynamic relationships.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Persuasively communicate the organization’s programs to potential funders
  • Meet with SRM senior leadership to determine potential major donor funding projects
  • Seeks to understand and positively communicate organizational goals/objectives, scope, feasibility, and funding needs for programs, projects, and operations
  • Maintains a caseload of 150 Major Donors through appreciation, cultivation, and solicitation
  • Maintains a high-quality stewardship process for active donors
  • Oversee the development and execution of a Legacy and Estate Gift Giving Program
    • Works with direct response and digital marketing teams to add estate-giving messaging in strategic mass-market communications.
    • Builds a portfolio of known estate gifts and seeks to forecast potential estate gifts.
  • Support the overall goals of the Advancement Department by assisting with writing and special projects, as needed. Assist with the development of compelling presentations and tailored information for funding partners and prospects.
  • Oversee the success of all on-site and off-site events for major donors
  • Responsible for the overall messaging and tone of SRM’s major donor year-end message
  • Invites donors to campus and provides tours
  • Assists CDO and CEO with consistent communication with SRM’s top donors
  • Works with CDO to develop strategies for capital campaigns
  • Other tasks and/or job-related responsibilities as requested.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field (Business, Communications, PR, or Marketing) and a minimum of 3 years of experience with a nonprofit working with major donors, estate donors, and/or foundation relationships
  • Previous development experience and/or previous experience working for a Rescue Mission desirable

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and is a constant witness.  Christ-centered and compassionate attitude in dealing with people including the homeless and faithfully upholds and exemplifies SRM’s Statement of Faith
  • Serves as an advocate for the homeless and raising awareness of the needs and concern for the addicted, and those in poverty; engaging others within one’s influence of greater involvement and effectiveness on behalf of this population in Colorado Springs.
  • Believes that donors are vital to accomplishing the Vision and Mission of Springs Rescue Mission and thus is part of mobilizing the community in the fight against addiction, poverty and homelessness
  • Highly ethical, trustworthy, and professional.
  • Knowledge of prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies and techniques in corporate and foundation fundraising expertise
  • Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective corporate and foundation donors, and interact via all communication levels with donor and prospect representatives
  • Demonstrated ability in grant and major donor proposal writing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for obtaining information about the giving programs of corporations, foundations and other potential stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills are essential
  • Ability to interact effectively with SRM leadership, departmental staff, community leadership, and funding agencies.
  • Excellent research, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Estate gift experience preferred.
  • Must be self-directed hands-on, and able to work with program and development staff to achieve organizational objectives
  • A proficiency in Microsoft programs and experience with donor databases.
    • Ensure major donor data is captured
  • Support the overall goals of the Advancement Department by assisting or leading special projects, as needed.
  • Team player, active participant in SRM ministry
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS

  Occasionally = 1%-33%; Frequently = 34%-66%; Continuously 67%-100%

  • Requires some evening and weekend work
  • Work environment will vary based on events and will include working outdoors (occasionally) and potentially in inclement weather.
  • Requires some travel, primarily within the state of Colorado
