Work Location: First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City

Work Status:  Full-time, Exempt

Salary Range: $230,000.00-$307,265.00

Reports To: Chairman of First Americans Museum Board of Directors

Direct Reports: Executives, Directors, and Executive Office Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides dynamic leadership in the management of overseeing the strategic and operational efficiencies of First Americans Museum (FAM). The Executive Director is highly involved in fundraising, marketing, development of strategic vision, collection development, general management, financial management, and fostering community relationships. The Executive Director is entrusted with cultivating and sustaining FAM’s valued relationships with Indigenous communities, corporations, foundations, organizations, institutions, FAM guests, and community members thereby utilizing superb public relationship skills.

This seasoned leader understands current trends within the museum realm and is successful at strategic planning. The Executive Director is responsible for making museum decisions, driving the workforce and resources toward strategic goals, supervising other executives, and overseeing growth plans.  Above all, the Executive Director is highly effective in a leadership role that requires clear communication skills and decisiveness.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to assess and address issues affecting FAM.
  • Actively participate in the development of financial and strategic plans for all areas of responsibility and the administration of those plans in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee daily operations, providing executive direction for strategies and efficiencies, compliance, and quality assurance.
  • Work with staff and Board of Directors on annual fundraising benefits and additional events, and oversee all external communications, including website, marketing collateral, newsletters, and social media.
  • Develop a strong positive working relationship with the Board of Directors to foster participation and engagement in FAM’s operations, goals, and objectives.
  • Cultivate relationships with colleagues and peers in the marketplace and museum spaces.
  • Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, and market brand, and develop strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness and expand FAM.
  • Represent FAM as one of the designated spokespersons and liaisons with the local media.
  • Actively build strong relationships and partnerships with the communities FAM serves.
  • Represent FAM as a thought leader and advocate for Indigenous people on a local, national, and international level.
  • Build and lead an effective team that’s dedicated to fulfilling FAM’s mission through highly successful programs, community engagement, and fundraising.
  • Participate in professional societies, conferences, and public relations activities that enhance the organization’s profile and cultivate resources as appropriate.
  • Closely strategize with the Institutional Advancement Department, Board of Directors, and others to identify donor prospects and call on prospects and donors personally as needed.
  • Represent FAM at Indigenous events, conferences, organization events and speaking engagements as a means of fundraising.
  • Oversee FAM Departments and work closely with Department Directors to achieve goals.
  • Actively develops and enforces FAM policies and procedures to ensure museum success.
  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills that promote open communication, friendliness, respect for all positions, and maintenance of confidentiality.
  • Serve as a role model for all, leading, mentoring, and managing FAM staff in areas under supervision.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge of current developments in the museum world by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, and by conducting research. Contribute to this body of knowledge through publishing and presenting when opportunities are identified.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Seven + years of diversified experience in museums, with at least three years at the senior level.
  • Master's Degree from an accredited higher-learning institution in a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising upper-level staff.
  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous communities and tribal nations.
  • Knowledge of local, regional, and national foundations that support museum programs and/or the arts and humanities.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Boards and Board committees.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, train & coordinate departments.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced museum environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, Board members, colleagues, stakeholders, volunteers, and members of the public.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with a diverse range of groups and organizations, and sensitivity to cultural diversity issues.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to donors, customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
