Organizational Background

Founded in 1984, https://www.alzalaska.org/ is the leading source of information, support, and services in the state of Alaska for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including their families and caregivers. Headquartered in Anchorage, Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska (ARA) provides a wide array of services to thousands of individuals and caregivers throughout Alaska extending from Juneau to Utqiagvik. The primary services offered to clients and caregivers include: 1. Education services include classes and activities to promote socialization, 2. Mini-Grants provide supplemental financial support to improve quality of life and increasing independent functioning. 3. Care Coordination services assist clients and caregivers navigating the available services and supports within the system of care. 4. Private consultation and coaching services are available to clients, caregivers or loved ones. Scheduled appointments are available for in-person visits, telephone, or video conference. 5. Support Groups are available to individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their families throughout the state either in-person, on-line, or by phone.

The organization is led by a 12-member Board of Directors and currently has 37 staff members. The combined operating budget is approximately $3.3M, with primary sources of revenue coming from Medicaid reimbursement, grants, and contributions.

Position Summary

Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska seeks an experienced and highly skilled Executive Director to lead and support all areas of the organization, including strategic planning, program operations, community engagement, and fundraising. The candidate will possess a passion for the mission of ARA, strong leadership skills, the ability to work closely and effectively with the Board of Directors, and strong operational and financial management skills. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and will possess the ability to lead and evaluate all ARA programs to ensure consistency with the philosophy and mission of the organization – To Support Alaskans affected by Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and other disabilities to ensure quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Administration

The Executive Director is the key management leader of Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska directly supervising all activities of the organization, its programs, staff, and facilities. Other key duties include fundraising and engaging with key partners and funding entities.

Essential Functions of the ARA Executive Director

 

  • Work with the Board to develop a clear vision, mission and strategic plan for the organization.
  • Translate the organization's strategic plan into operating objectives and exercise a leadership role in implementing the mission and plans of the organization.
  • Provide advice to the President of the Board, the Board of Directors and Board committees on all matters pertaining to Board responsibilities.
  • Manage the operational and support activities of the agency.
  • Ensure the adequacy and soundness of the agency's accounting and financial structure and ensure maintenance of accurate financial records.
  • Oversee the preparation of the annual budget for presentation, discussion, and Board approval.
  • Monitor financial reports to ensure the agency is operating in conformance with established budgets.
  • Research and seek various sources of financial support for the agency including private and public grants, fees for service and charitable contributions.
  • Develop and/or coordinate the preparation, submission, acceptance, and implementation of grant proposals. Manage grant awards to comply with granting agency requirements.
  • Work with the board and development staff to formulate and implement fund raising programs to improve the agency's resources.
  • Maintain an organizational climate that attracts, motivates, and retains high quality staff by implementing progressive human resources policies and practices.
  • Promote the Agency's programs, goals, objectives, and client concerns in meetings with public and private officials.
  • Function as Agency spokesperson; Advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disabilities.
  • Report progress, issues, and problems to the Board of Directors. Personally or through staff, support Board committees, provide timely notification of Board and committee meetings and assure the minutes of Board and committee meetings accurately reflect action.
  • Ensure the agency's property and equipment is maintained, insured and secured.
  • Ensure compliance with all agency's policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Professional Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in business administration, public administration, human service, behavioral health, or related area.
  • Minimum of five years of administrative experience at the executive or supervisory level.
  • Ability to pass a state and federal criminal background check.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record and proof of auto insurance.

  • Passion for serving and advocating for persons with Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and related disabilities.
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy, and initiative.
  • Ability to advocate, educate and lobby for policies supporting individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and related disabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff and external contacts to build and maintain successful teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze information and make timely, appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to lead, direct, supervise and evaluate personnel.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, organize, and analyze growth opportunities.
  • Knowledge of health care or social service systems.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities.

Compensation

The salary range proposed for this position is $125,000 - $160,000, commensurate with experience and education. The position comes with a comprehensive array of benefits including health insurance, life insurance, 401k retirement, and paid vacation/sick leave and holidays.
