DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing all fund-raising initiatives for the Marathon Public Library (MPL), including the annual fund; a major gifts program; special events; planned giving; and the current capital campaign Heart of Marathon. S/he is actively engaged in prospect research; grant writing; and cultivating and soliciting current and potential individual, corporate, and foundation donors.

In partnership with the Library Director, the Director of Development also assumes responsibilities in external relations, finance, Board governance, and planning.  S/he works closely with the Library Director and the Board of Directors in all fundraising and other operational activities as noted.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As the primary development officer for the library:

  1. Develop, manage, and implement annual individual fundraising campaigns, including Permian Basin Gives; Spring appeal; Fall Appeal; and Giving Tuesday;
  2. Develop and grow a major individual giving program, including the identification, cultivation, and direct solicitation of major donor prospects;
  3. Increase and diversify the funding base, which includes support from individuals, foundations, businesses, and corporations; Brewster County and other government entities; and special events;
  4. Maintain the library’s donor management software (Little Green Light); ensure accurate and timely data entry and gift processing; create and analyze giving reports; and execute prompt acknowledgement of all donations;
  5. Establish and maintain relationships with assigned foundation and corporate prospects; write grant proposals and respond to all reporting requirements;
  6. Develop, implement, and file required reports for assigned state, federal, and private grants;
  7. Develop, manage and implement Heart of Marathon, a comprehensive campaign to enlarge the library and revitalize the Marathon History Museum;
  8. Foster a culture of philanthropy among Board members, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders;
  9. Be responsible for the development of all print materials to support fund-raising activities; and
  10. Develop a gift recognition program.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILTIES

Community Relations

  1. Establish and maintain effective relationships and cooperative arrangements when appropriate with the public; MPL Board, staff, and volunteers; MISD administration and faculty; and other community groups and organizations;
  2. With the Library Director, serve as a spokesperson and representative for MPL in Marathon; Brewster County; Texas; and the country; and
  3. Advocate, promote, and publicize MPL programs, special events, recognition, and more through a variety of media including print, TV, radio and online.

Finance

  1. With the Library Director and Board Treasurer, develop and maintain sound financial best practices; and
  2. Work with the Library Director to prepare the annual and campaign fundraising budgets and help ensure that MPL operates within its budgets.

Planning

  1. Develop annual fundraising and community relations plans with the Library Director and Board of Directors and help carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree a plus
  2. Five or more years of development experience;
  3. Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills; and
  4. Knowledge of and experience with donor management software.
