The Executive Director will be the focal point for communications, activities, and programs emanating from CAIR-AL's office in conjunction with CAIR-AL Board of Directors.

General Management

  • Oversee office operations
  • Act as the primary contact person for the hiring of staff
  • Supervise staff/volunteers
  • Coordinate the maintenance and upkeep of the office facility

Fund Development

  • Oversee the organization's fundraising plan and engage in fundraising activities
  • In coordination with the treasurer, develop, manage, report and insure accountability for, and adherence to, budgets

Board of Directors Relations

  • Attend Board meetings
  • Assist Board Chair with preparation of agendas and materials for Board meetings
  • Serve a supportive role in ensuring that CAIR-AL by-laws are being adhered to and followed

Community Relations

  • Act as the principal public face for CAIR-AL
  • Interface and build relationships with community members, organizations, and interfaithleaders or designate staff to do so in particular circumstances and supervise such assignments
  • Interact with Muslim community members on a regular basis
  • Keep contact with other CAIR chapters and the CAIR national office

Media Relations

  • Represent the organization in public forums and media events or designate staff to do so and supervise such assignments
  • Develop and disseminate news releases, newsletters, action alerts, press statements, and talking points or assign staff to do so and supervise such assignments
  • Develop relationships with, and interact with, media on an ongoing basis
  • Monitor media coverage or assign staff to do so and supervise such assignments

Civic and Government Relations

  • Engage with local, state, federal government officials on an ongoing basis to the extent possible
  • Meet and collaborate with civil rights organizations on common causes
  • Oversee educational events and campaigns for community empowerment

*Program Development

  • Oversee programs, projects and campaigns; assist with trainings
  • Develop new programs and campaigns

* Civil Rights

  • Establish CAIR-AL civil rights department, with ability for CAIR-AL to represent clients in house or through an established network of pro-bono attorneys
  • Insure that all calls are responded to promptly
  • Other Duties as Assigned

All CAIR-AL staff, whether permanent or temporary, are required to assist in general duties such as answering of phones, assisting with office management and cleanup, assisting with special projects such as conferences, conventions, mass mailing, and other CAIR-AL events. CAIR-AL employees may be asked to participate in events outside of normal business hours as instructed by CAIR-AL Board of Directors (emergent and priority issues, special circumstances from time to time, flex time).

* CAIR-AL is a fledgling organization which does not yet have the capacity to allow the ED to fulfill these responsibilities in light of the others listed. The ED will be expected to bear in mind the need for these duties to be fulfilled as soon as practicable as s/he is able to delegate other duties to staff. The ED will therefore be expected to delegate other responsibilities listed so long as staff has the competence and experience to carry them out. The Ed will also be expected to lead regular staff meetings in order to assign tasks and to evaluate the ability of staff to carry out such duties, so the ED can concentrate on other tasks.


The ideal candidate would possess all these qualifications, but we recognize that is expecting a lot, so these should be seen simply as a guide to the kind of candidate we are seeking.

    • Bachelor’s Degree (post graduate or law school degree is desirable)
    • Commitment to CAIR-AL’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to advancing human rights, locally, nationally and globally
    • Ability to work collegially with employees and community organizations community
    • Ability to organize and prioritize the work of the organization
    • An understanding of the legislative process in Alabama and the United States
    • Strong ability and desire to serve as staff leader and mentor; excellent supervision and staff support skills with proven ability to work with different work styles and to facilitate staff communication and collegiality.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including being able to be key media and public event spokesperson
    • Ability to build the organization and carry out its strategic plan
    • Ability to lead organizational development by cultivating donors
    • Ability to write compelling grant requests
    • Demonstrated experience and comfort in representing diverse American-Muslim communities, working across multiple ethnic communities, Muslim and non-Muslim, and ensuring broad diversity of engagement and participation
