Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 24,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer)

MRNY is a multi-service organization.  Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more."

Current Opening: Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks to hire an Equity and Racial Justice Coordinator. This is a full-time position that will be based in our Bushwick office, with extensive travel to our other four community centers (Queens, Staten Island, Long Island, and Westchester).  This position will support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEI) in the implementation of plans that promote equity and belonging within the organization. A significant part of the role is promoting and developing training programs to enhance employee and members understanding on inclusions issues. Additionally, the Coordinator will collaborate with our Human Resource (HR) team to implement equitable recruitment, hiring, and onboarding and retention practices.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with the existing DEI Committee, lead the development and implementation of a meaningful and impactful DEI strategy that addresses the organization’s strategic plan
  • Build a close and collaborative, cross-departmental partnership with organizational leaders and key stakeholders to meet the DEI goals identified in the strategic plan
  • Support the creation and implementation of systems designed to support resolution of issues and incidents related to racism / anti-Blackness as they arise within the organization
  • Collaborate with DEI Committee on calendar of events aimed at employee engagement around key DEI initiatives, and engage with management and staff to create a culture of participation in and contribution to those initiatives and goals
  • Train and facilitate small and large groups on the topic of equity and inclusion, analyze the organizational data, present on these topics, and recommend action items to the DEI Committee
  • Work with leaders across the organization to embed DEI into all parts of the organization; review strategic and department plans to advise on the integration of DEI principals and support departments to confront anti-Blackness and integrate anti-racist practices in their work
  • Ensure that decision-making for organization-wide goals, programs, products, and strategic plans are inclusive of the diverse range of voices, experiences, and perspectives of the organizational community
  • Advance the organization’s mission and core values by cultivating an environment that celebrates all forms of identities and perspectives
  • Establish metrics for program build out and accountability.

The successful candidate must:

  • Be eligible to work in the US;
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in community organizing, labor organizing, and/or leading DEI efforts;
  • Possess a deep understanding and developed practices of how to confront and deconstruct anti-Blackness;
  • Have experience working across a variety of multicultural, multilingual, and immigrant communities;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and analysis of social, racial and economic justice and their intersections;
  • Have experience in curriculum design, training, and program implementation;
  • Be able to work collaboratively across teams and audiences with different perspectives;
  • Possess time management, multi-tasking, organizational, and project management skills, especially with complex, cross-organizational projects;
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Be open to working some evenings and weekends;
  • Be willing to travel throughout NYC, Westchester County, and Suffolk County (we are currently virtual);
  • Approach work with flexibility/adaptability.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Have some experience interfacing with Human Resources, including talent or coaching;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish speaker.
