Mission & History

Westmoreland Sanctuary was founded in 1957 with the mission to acquire, enrich, and preserve land for the free use, education, and enjoyment of the public.

Organization

Westmoreland Sanctuary is an independent non-profit with a staff of three full-time employees and one part-time employee. In years unaffected by COVID-19, we reach between 6,000-8,000 individuals through diverse programming to schools, scouts, birthday parties, camps, and adults. Programs have been modified for COVID but we continue to teach following New York State guidelines.

Environmental Administrator

Full-time independent contractor position: 40 hours/week, pay is commensurate with experience. There is opportunity to work in a supportive environment that will help acquire a variety of skills. The candidate should have an appreciation for the natural world and want to advocate for it. The candidate should also be flexible and self-guided. The job is onsite.

Job Summary

This is an entry level position with the opportunity to advance. The job reports to the Executive Director and the General Manager. This position will have the following, but not limited to, responsibilities: donor thank-you letters, grant-writing, PowerPoint presentations, newsletter production, organizational procedures development, and other official correspondence. It will also include using social media platform management and contribution among other tools. This job may require hours beyond the nine to five, which will be compensated. This person will need to have impeccable writing skills and be detailed-oriented. This is largely an onsite position.

The candidate must be flexible, articulate, motivated, and able to write collaboratively. The applicant must represent the organization in a positive manner to all members of the community. Enthusiasm for the natural world is a must.

Duties:

Job responsibilities are the following:

  • Use online platforms and social media
  • Write and organize campaigns and events to solicit donations
  • Write and design promotional materials and increase awareness of an organization’s work, goals, and financial needs
  • Maintain records of donor information
  • Work with Executive Director and grant writers to research, write, and submit grants for the capital campaign and more broadly Westmoreland Sanctuary’s general operating budget
  • Help organize annual & biannual fundraisers
  • Events may include, hikes, galas, outdoor cocktail parties, and dinners.

Education and Training:

The candidate will need a bachelor’s degree and strong communication and organizational skills. In general, there is a preference for candidates who have studied journalism, communications, English, or business. Prior internships in conservation, education, grant writing would be helpful. Minimum B.A. in communications. Journalism, English

  • Independent, flexible, and strong interpersonal skills is key
  • Must be able to work in a team setting
  • Must be versed in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), and be willing to learn website management (WordPress)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Other Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in office administration
  • Leading volunteers
  • Assisting with preparing and leading presentations to our Board of Trustees
