JOB TITLE: Director of Finance

STATUS: Full-Time

REPORTS TO: President & CEO

LOCATION: Washington, DC, Hybrid schedule.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Stimson Center's Director of Finance reports to the President & CEO and directly oversees all financial activities of the organization, including budgeting, accounting, auditing, and reporting. As part of the extended management team, the Director of Finance represents Stimson through interface with grantors, grantees, and partners. In collaboration with the CEO, they contribute to Board reporting and other strategic and analytical projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs the Finance department in accordance with established internal controls, policies and procedures, and GAAP;
  • Leads the preparation and implementation of organization's annual operating budget;
  • Oversees all aspects of the accounting cycle ensuring compliance with state, federal and funder requirements;
  • Oversees payroll to assure accuracy and reliability;
  • Prepares and manages cash flow and investment activities;
  • Ensures effectiveness of internal controls and serves as the internal transaction auditor and fraud prevention expert for the organization;
  • Leads the annual audit process, all funder requested audits, and A-133 audit. Liaises with external auditors and the Audit and Finance committees of the Board of Directors, assesses any changes necessary; and ensures that the organization's 990 is filed accurately and on time annually;
  • Oversees organization's process for preparing indirect cost rates;
  • Manages the Center's enterprise risk program;
  • Reviews and executes funder agreements, MOUs, and other legally binding documents;
  • Prepares and executes consultant and subgrantee agreements;
  • Reviews and approves funder budgets and reports;
  • Produces regular and ad-hoc financial reports and analysis, disseminating and presenting to senior staff, Board and others as required;
  • Develops and implements applicable policies and procedures;
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 8 years of financial management experience in hands-on nonprofit finance administration;
  • Bachelor's degree required; CPA a plus;
  • Knowledge of GAAP, particularly as it applies to accounting requirements of nonprofit organizations preferred;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, preferably as a member of a senior management team;
  • Strong financial reporting, budgeting and internal controls skills;
  • Experience leading financial, administrative, and compliance management in a multi-funder environment including US government grants and contracts, private foundation and corporate donors;
  • Working knowledge of 2 CFR Part 200, FAR, and other grant and contract regulations;
  • Experience working with and supporting external auditors for non-profits of Stimson's scope and scale;
  • Must be highly proficient in use of Excel, as well as standard office and accounting software and familiar with business and office operations;
  • Strong alignment with Stimson's core values; and
  • Experience managing and developing staff.
