The Role:

The Director of Monitoring & Evaluation is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the organization's operational monitoring and impact evaluation program under the Measurement, Innovation, Learning, and Evaluation (MILE) program at Tides. The Director will build and evolve the MILE program. The Director will oversee, guide, and motivate a team of analysts and will be accountable for the team’s data management, analysis, reporting and stakeholder engagement on monitoring and evaluation projects, as well as related administrative and communication tasks. The Director will be responsible for partnering across various levels and departments at Tides to help monitor progress on Tides’ 2023-2025 Strategic Plan. The Director will also advocate for and foster a collaborative, data-driven learning culture at Tides.

What you will do:
Program Design, Management, and Innovation // 45%

  • Co-lead a stakeholder engagement process to develop an impact evaluation framework for Tides, defining: Tides’ philosophy of evaluation, measures of success for outcomes in Tides’ Theory of Change & Strategic Plan, and a methodology for evaluating progress against outcomes rooted in participatory methods of identifying causal pathways and principles of equitable evaluation
  • Evolve the organization's impact evaluation program strategy incrementally over the 2023-2025 Strategic Plan period
  • Supervise and host business analysis discussions to map requirements and inform the design of solutions that strengthen Tides’ ability to monitor operational performance metrics and external impact
  • Supervise the maturation of monitoring and evaluation at Tides through participatory methods and equitable evaluation principles
  • Partner with internal teams at Tides through a service delivery and customer success approach

Team Management and Supervision // 25%

  • Manage a team of analysts, providing leadership, supervision, guidance, and support
  • Provide regular performance feedback to help team members learn and grow
  • Balance team workload and ensure a sustainable pace of progress and activities
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Supervise the team’s analysis and reporting on operational, financial, and client data to track KPI targets and report on Tides goals and objectives, including the completion of recurring process monitoring reports, surveys, analyses, special projects, and various seasonal activities of the MILE team
  • Supervise the implementation of evaluations of Tides’ operations, services and partnerships to track progress, learn, celebrate impact, and equip Tides to make data-driven decisions
  • Ensure that team members are producing accurate, high-quality output with a customer service mindset, through thoughtful business analysis, problem-solving, collaboration and solutions mapping
  • Mentor and coach team members to ensure their professional growth and development, fostering an enabling environment for team members to thrive and achieve their goals
  • Plan and conduct teambuilding activities and retreats to foster the team’s collaboration, trust, creativity, and strong morale

Data Management & Analysis // 20%

  • Lead complex, cross-departmental projects for the MILE team, in collaboration with Tides Center and Tides Foundation teams
  • Periodically conduct analysis to evaluate trends, identify patterns, and derive actionable insights for Tides
  • Ensure quality of technical assets, outputs, and deliverables of the team
  • Stay current on internal processes and procedures related to enterprise systems and platforms that drive analytics and reporting at Tides (Salesforce, NetSuite, among others)
  • Communicate and advocate for proper data management through appropriate channels and teams at Tides
  • Supervise the design and project management of surveying, interviewing, and other information-gathering tools to gain feedback from internal and external stakeholders

Administration & Communication // 10%

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that program objectives and outcomes are met and that the MILE team is proactively supporting and enabling the success of internal teams at Tides
  • Serve as a champion of the MILE team’s work, promoting an org-wide understanding of MILE team’s mandate, activities, and achievements
  • Help build and nurture relationships between other teams at Tides to ensure a holistic, integrated internal infrastructure for measurement, evaluation, and learning, aligned with Tides’ 2023-2025 Strategic Plan and vision for impact
  • Supervise the team’s timely and effective processing of administrative tasks including budgeting, tracking expenses, and other team reporting
  • Serve as an advocate for strengthening a data-driven culture at Tides, promoting data integrity and data governance between and within teams
  • Represent the MILE team at internal discussions, stakeholder engagement meetings, with vendors and in other forum as needed

What you will bring:

Data, Analysis, and Evaluation 

  • Deep expertise in equitable impact evaluation principles and methods, including management of impact evaluation program(s) and team(s) in a philanthropic, advocacy, fiscal sponsorship, or other intermediary context
  • Strong ability to synthesize and analyze information rapidly and to develop persuasive arguments based on quantitative and qualitative data
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing, analyzing, and reporting data in Excel, building dashboards, and using other quantitative and qualitative evaluation tools and methodologies
  • Demonstrated innovation in analytical reporting, data management, and frameworks
  • Experience using Salesforce, NetSuite or similar enterprise customer relationship management and finance platforms/programs
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new systems to manage information and report insights

Education & Experience:

  • Graduate degree in social sciences, public policy, evaluation, economics, or equivalent years of related work experience can be substituted for a college degree.
  • 10+ years of experience in evaluation, data analytics and surveying
  • 5+ years of experience in management, supervision, and development of a team
  • Management of impact evaluation program(s) and team(s) in a philanthropic, advocacy or other similar intermediary context
  • Demonstrated experience in participatory evaluation methods and experience in surveying internal and external stakeholders through mixed methods
  • Experience participating in and representing organization(s) at industry convenings, events and conferences to support organizational learning, sharing of best/next practices and approaches for the organization’s continuous learning and innovation in program and frameworks management
  • Experience leading and motivating a team at a large, multi-faceted organization, including leading a team through significant, complex change initiatives.

Salary Range

Tides is committed to providing a competitive compensation package. The starting salary for this role ranges from $123,869 to $185,742 based on geographic location, years of experience, and ensuring pay equity within the organization.
