Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY), an innovative, non-profit college that provides a uniquely effective model of Purpose-Centered Education, seeks a Chief Development Officer to work with the President and the Board of Trustees to expand fundraising capacity in support of the college and our students.

MCNY’s academic and social justice mission aims to prepare students for professional success and empower them to deliver positive change to their communities and workplaces.  The college’s two new, state-of-the-art campuses are ideally located on West Street in the Financial District and in the South Bronx in the Hub district.

The position of Chief Development Officer is a unique opportunity for a seasoned fundraiser to make a meaningful difference in the lives of adult students.  The successful candidate, who will come with experience in higher education or another non-profit development setting, will work collaboratively to develop and successfully execute plans to secure increasing levels of individual and grant support; provide leadership for major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, donor relations, prospect research, and alumni involvement; and communicate the power and promise of the mission and goals of Metropolitan College of New York to external and internal constituencies.   The Chief Development Officer, reporting directly to the President, will also be responsible for recruiting and developing additional team members as fundraising capacity grows.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will have at least seven years of broad-based experience in a college, university or other non-profit development office with established annual fund, major gift, grants, and alumni affairs programs. Major gift solicitation experience and significant fundraising achievements in a non-profit environment required.  The candidate must have demonstrated skills in strategic fund development with a history of solid results. The candidate must also possess relevant knowledge regarding establishing a planned giving program. In addition, the candidate must be a self- starter, who enjoys building new and existing external relationships and is goals driven, entrepreneurial, creative and comfortable reaching out to alumni, donors and new prospects.  The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, anti-racism, and inclusion.

Knowledge and Education

The candidate must possess an excellent understanding of the goals and objectives of a private non-profit college.  A master’s degree is desired; a bachelor’s degree is required.

 Leadership and Management Responsibilities

  • Work with the President and development team in planning long and short-term strategies to develop relationships and secure major, planned and annual gifts from individuals, foundation and government entities.
  • Collaborate with the President and Board to develop aspirational and achievable principal fundraising goals and measurable strategic objectives while following widely accepted best practices.
  • Work with the President and Board to identify, cultivate and manage a portfolio of prospects generating 5-10 prospect visits per month, leading to growth in the number of completed solicitations.
  • With the senior grant writer and the manager of development operations, prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements and other documents required in the process of securing commitments from donors.
  • With the development team, plan, execute and track the effectiveness of donor prospecting events, including an annual gala.
  • Design and lead annual fund drives.
  • Establish measurable goals for annual reviews of the effectiveness of fundraising initiatives.
  • With the director of alumni communications and marketing and the coordinator of alumni and community engagement, establish and build an effective alumni and volunteer program and work with alumni leaders and volunteers to effectively direct their efforts to advance the goals of the college.
  • Implement an alumni and donor relations and stewardship program to effectively demonstrate meaningful appreciation to donors at all levels of giving.
  • Utilize best practices to set direction, manage and report on all development-related activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
