We are currently hiring an experienced Underwriter to join our team.

The Underwriter will work closely with a team of underwriters to review personal injury cases for pre-settlement litigation funding nationwide, with a heavy emphasis in NY.  All personal injury case types are reviewed with emphasis on motor vehicle accidents, labor law, premises liability and civil rights cases.  This is a salary-based position with annual bonus potential and full company benefits.

You MUST HAVE PERSONAL INJURY EXPERIENCE to be considered for this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations of personal injury cases. Assessments will require the examination of the handling attorney, venue, docket, case facts, legal issues, causation, medical records, insurance coverage, and due diligence background searches.
  • Review and interpret legal documents, background records, and other necessary information to make funding decisions.
  • Work closely with lawyers and claimants to gather all necessary information and documentation.
  • Assign gross estimated case values, taking into consideration anticipated liens, as well as other potential liabilities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with law firms and legal professionals.
  • Carefully and confidently conclude final funding decisions.
  • Utilize a CRM database to enter underwriter evaluations.
  • Attend weekly underwriting meetings and lunch and learns
  • Collaborate with the underwriting team on specific cases and review guidelines for specific case types.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Juris doctorate degree, paralegal certificate, and/or experience working with personal injury cases.
  • Strong understanding of legal terminology and processes.
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and risk assessment skills.
  • Ability to locate and review state court dockets and federal dockets on Pacer.
  • Ability to assign venue-specific case values after appropriate training, with heavy NY emphasis;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professional, quality legal work product;
  • Ability to speak with attorneys regarding case facts and procedural history, and to identify key information and documents needed to finalize review.
