Description

Part of a community of professionals that evaluates educational needs of each child; plans and executes individual programs; assesses effectiveness of each child's plan; documents observations and prepares reports.

  • Along with classroom team, develops specific, integrated goals for each child; maintains educational records and submits written reports evaluating each child's progress.
  • Integrates special educational program with other therapeutic services, including aquatic therapy, hippotherapy, if offered as part of the school’s program.
  • Participates in conferences, IEP meetings, clinics and all trans-disciplinary meetings with administrators, staff and families assessing the needs, abilities, objectives and achievements of each student.
  • Arranges and maintains bulletin boards; prepares attendance reports; performs other related record keeping and classroom upkeep functions as required; participates in special activities as appropriate.
  • Implements appropriate behavior management techniques; effectively maintains classroom management.
  • Keeps current on educational research, trends, and practices, and implements them when appropriate.
  • Utilizes effectively a combination of appropriate teaching materials and techniques.
  • Acts as a good role model by maintaining appropriate classroom behavior and conversation in front of students and visitors at all times,
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Detailed knowledge of practices and principles of education of children with various handicaps; knowledge of normal child development; ability to establish and maintain relationship with each child assessing abilities and limitations; to carry out program objectives; to learn use of and operate adaptive equipment; ability to perform strenuous physical activity; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to respect and maintain confidentiality; to adhere to personnel policies and safety procedures; to establish and maintain proper working relationship with students, supervisors, administrators and families; basic knowledge of computer technology.

QUALIFICATIONS:

B.A./B.S. Degree; N.J. certification as Teacher of the Handicapped; previous experience with developmentally disabled students preferred; fingerprint examination and approval by State of New Jersey
