The Surfrider Foundation is recruiting for two positions: An East Coast Regional Director and a West Coast Regional Director to manage and guide Surfrider’s regional field teams. They will lead a team of highly experienced and competent field policy and organizing staff to advance the mission of the Surfrider Foundation and meet the organization’s strategic goals.

The territory for the West Coast Regional Director position includes: Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington. The ideal candidate will reside in the territory they are managing.

The territory for the East Coast Regional Director position includes: Texas, Great Lakes, Florida, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Northeast regions. The ideal candidate will reside in the territory they are managing.

We are looking for ambitious individuals to be responsible for the oversight of regional staff, maintaining regional budgets, helping to coordinate regional campaigns that unify policy and organizing work with national staff, and implementing innovative strategies to reach organizational strategic goals. The successful regional director will assist the organization to reach its regional fundraising goals, assist in ensuring strategic objectives are met and will help build and maintain sound working relationships with all departments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Ability to help identify mission-aligned environmental campaign opportunities that employ on the ground grassroots-based chapter and student club network model and policy work.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Network Strategy to help select and evaluate opportunities for growth in the network, including the Chapter & Club Leadership Training Conferences.
  • Work with the Senior Environmental Director to select and evaluate environmental initiative opportunities.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Development to identify regional funding opportunities and support those efforts.
  • Work with the Senior Legal Director to ensure regional staff are in compliance with state and federal lobbying registering requirements, and timely reporting of any lobbying activities and/or following established procedures for any campaign litigation
  • Work with Senior Marketing/Communications Director to ensure that regional staff are sharing stories and utilizing digital platforms to capture impact of successful regional campaigns and programs.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings with the Senior Director of Environment and Senior Director of Network Strategy to help maintain organizational alignment.
  • Track environmental impact from campaigns, programs, and chapter activities within the respective regions.

Management Responsibilities Include: 

  • Management of the Regional Manager and Regional Policy Manager positions.
  • Creating and maintaining strong field network relationships.
  • Reporting on the weekly, monthly, and quarterly performance of the region to their supervisor and appropriate department leads.
  • Mentoring and training regional teams to achieve strategic goals as identified in the Surfrider Strategic Plan.
  • Responsible for hiring and onboarding of new Regional Managers and Policy Managers.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings with Senior Director of Environment and Senior Director of Network Strategy.

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters Degree preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Proven fundraising/ donor relationship experience
  • 7+ years of experience managing teams and working on environmental issues, preferably in a non-profit or government setting
  • Proven experience in a senior management position
  • Ability to work remotely and independently
  • The ability to make critical decisions under pressure
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Efficient communication skills
  • Supervise and direct policy managers and regional managers
  • Ensure policy and regional managers are working in a cohesive manner to meet strategic objectives
  • Identify and support funding opportunities in the region

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 

This is a full-time position. The West Coast Regional Director position will be compensated with a salary commensurate with candidate’s experience level, starting at $90,000. The Surfrider Foundation offers a salary that is competitive with other national, not-for-profit conservation organizations.
