Description

School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization made up of hundreds of volunteers, who give their time, talents, and support to the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1993, the mission of School on Wheels is the enhancement of educational opportunities for children without a home, from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in the education of these children and provide them with the highest quality education possible.

 

Since 1993 we have:

  • Provided mentoring and tutoring for more than 50,000 students - each one with a story, past, and future.
  • We reach six counties in Southern California covering some 2,500 square miles.
  • We partner with 400+ sites across our region. Those sites include shelters, school districts, and after-school programs.
  • Each year we provide some 5,000 students with the school supplies they need 

 

Position Overview

Reporting to the Regional Team Leader and working with SRLC Specialist, the Skid Row Learning Center Instructor will develop programs and curriculum, instruct students, and oversee volunteers. A successful Skid Row Learning Center Instructor will consistently support School on Wheels’ academic outcome goals, as well as build the reputation of the Center as a community resource. The Skid Row Learning Center Instructor will be a strong advocate for our programs. 


Hours may vary and may include half-day Saturdays, with reduced hours another day of the week.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Supervise After-School Program at the center
  • Implement curriculum for students grades K-12 attending the SRLC
  • Organize and supervise art projects and field trips
  • Recruit students from The Union Rescue Mission (URM), shelters, motels, etc.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers - ensure success by providing the necessary resources
  • Create and cultivate a positive environment in order to retain volunteers
  • Facilitate the intake process for families - assist with school enrollments if needed
  • Distribute and collect annual student/parent surveys
  • Develop a rapport with parents and students to ensure regular and impactful communication
  • Serve as a liaison between School on Wheels and the local LAUSD homeless liaison officer
  • Network with URM, local schools, and social service agencies
  • Reporting and database management
  • Support the Executive Director and leadership team with communication to foundations and donors during site visits

Qualifications

    • Working knowledge of Salesforce or similar database management software.
    • Working knowledge of Google Suite, Zoom
    • At least three years in-classroom experience teaching or leading instruction
    • Able to collaborate on and design curriculum
    • Cultural sensitivity and empathy for students experiencing homelessness
    • Strong communications/presentation experience
    • Organizational and time management skills
    • At least one year of experience in managing volunteers or relevant experience
    • Educational requirement - Bachelor’s Degree preferred
    • Bilingual- English/Spanish required
  • Must be currently fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Must pass a Livescan Fingerprint background check

 

Salary and Benefits:

  • Hourly rate - $23.07-$25.00 DOE
