Position Description

The Senior Development Associate supports the CPC Center’s fundraising and donor engagement through development and communication activities. This position reports to the Director of Development and works closely with the Executive Director and Deputy Chief of Staff. The Senior Development Associate plays an important role by tracking key relationships to build and maintain revenue streams, creating and sending engaging content to donors and prospects, conducting research to identify prospective funders, helping draft and assemble grant proposals and reports, and providing overall support to the development team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Director of Development and in coordination with the executive office of the CPC Center, the Senior Development Associate will support the following areas of fundraising and donor relationship management through the entire cycle of the donor relationship:

Prospecting

  • Support Director of Development and Deputy Chief of Staff in prospecting for new individual and institutional donors

  • Identify potential new donors from donor and prospecting data resources

  • Recommend strategy for outreach to potential new donors, such as recommending areas of alignment between the organization’s work and donor interests

Assisting with Proposals and Solicitations 

  • Draft and review donor-focused print and web communications such as case statements, program overviews, fundraising emails and appeals, etc, identifying and creating content specific to particular areas of donor interest that align with the organization’s activities to increase donor engagement with the organization’s work

  •  Assemble required materials for major individual donor solicitations and pitches as needed, including by making recommendations about particular content to share with donors that aligns with their funding priorities

  • Support Director of Development in foundation grant proposals and reporting, accessing web portals, identifying documents required, reaching out to appropriate team members to assemble needed documents, drafting write-ups highlighting the CPC Center’s work on key grant deliverables, and ensuring that the conditions of grant awards have been met

  • Support the Deputy Chief of Staff in donor relations and applications to organizational donors, by drafting materials for funders, updating content, assembling needed documents

Moves Management and Stewardship 

  • Track moves management and stewardship in donor CRM

  • Add contact reports from donor meetings in CRM

  • Enter deadlines for grant reports, followup meetings, etc. in calendaring systems and monitoring dates for key personnel

  • Schedule renewal process and communications with donors, including regularity of interactions with donors and prospects and making recommendations about what content they should receive

  • Document donor participation in events (online and offline) and follow up as needed, helping identify specific areas of donor interest and engagement

  • Implement moves management strategies

  • Report out on deadlines and pending moves in regular Development meetings

  • Export transactions from online donation portal and import in CRM

Gift Acknowledgement

  • Draft and send timely thank you notes to acknowledge receipt of gifts.

Scheduling Donor and Prospect Engagements

  • Schedule meetings with existing and potential donors on behalf of the Executive Director, Director of Development, or Deputy Chief of Staff, including helping identify which meetings are highest priority and when they should occur

  • Identify research needs, conduct research, and write briefing materials about donors and prospects for Director of Development, Executive Director, or Deputy Chief of Staff or others in advance of fundraising meetings

  • Participate on as-needed basis in fundraising meetings and provide feedback and recommendations on next steps

Key Relationships

This position will report to the Director of Development and interact closely with the Deputy Chief of Staff, Executive Director, and others in the executive office. When necessary the position will collaborate with the Policy, Legislative Affairs, Communications, Organizing, and Training and Capacity Building leads.

Qualifications

  • 6-9 years of progressively responsible fundraising and donor relations experience in a nonprofit or advocacy setting

  • Familiarity with donor databases and CRMs

  • Experience with grant proposal and report writing and editing

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work independently

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Working knowledge of Google Suite of applications

  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving, and organizational skills

  • The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of staff members and partners

  • Commitment to centering anti-racism and equity in work

  • Demonstrated flexibility and openness in responding to changing work priorities

  • Ability to handle projects of various sizes and perform well under pressure in a small organization with a fast-paced, multitasking environment

Salary: $70,000-$75,000, depending on experience.

Benefits: The Senior Development Associate will also receive excellent benefits including generous vacation, paid holidays, 401(k) match, and paid health insurance. This position is within a union-represented bargaining unit, and specific terms and conditions of employment may be subject to a collective bargaining agreement.

FLSA Classification: Exempt.

Duration of Employment: This is a term-limited position (maximum duration of two years).

Location: This position is remote until the CPC Center’s office is able to reopen. At that time, this position will be based in our Washington, DC office.
