SENIOR DATA SCIENCE FELLOW

 

ABOUT THE POSITION

This is an exciting 12-month fellowship opportunity for an experienced  data science professional looking to develop a career at the intersection of clean energy and social justice.

Groundswell is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that builds community power through equitable community solar projects and resilience centers, clean energy programs that reduce energy burdens, and pioneering research initiatives that help light the way to clean energy futures for all. Groundswell leads clean energy programs and projects in six states including the District of Columbia, including serving more than 4,000 income-qualified customers with more than $1.85 million per year in clean energy savings. TEAM DESCRIPTION AND POSITION

Data is at the center of everything we do. The Labs and R&D Team applies  expertise in database management, machine learning, data visualization, statistics, and computational analysis to solve complex challenges in the solar industry. As a Senior Data Science Fellow at Groundswell, you will be part of a team that’s leading the next wave of disruption in data analytics and policy-driven research at a whole new scale using sound statistical, mathematical, and econometric techniques. We use every method we can possibly think of from logistic regression to deep learning. As such, we are a highly interdisciplinary team, and solve challenges collaboratively.

As a Senior Data Science Fellow at Groundswell, you will contribute to the management, design, and analysis of various datasets and systems of the Labs and R&D team by leveraging a broad stack of technologies – R, Python, AWS and more to reveal the insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data. Leading with excellence, integrity, and respect, the Senior Data Science Fellow is responsible for analyzing data, gathering requirements, and developing advanced analytics solutions that will expand the technical capabilities of Groundswell’s growing data science research efforts that support programmatic work for the Labs and R&D Team. The ideal candidate is someone with quantitative modeling and programming abilities (Python, SAS, SQL, or R), data analysis and visualization experience, and research capabilities. To be successful in this role, the candidate will be able to innovate, be self-directed, and able to work effectively across several different functional units in a collaborative environment. This position is ideal for someone who is extremely detail-oriented.

Reporting to the Director of Data Science Research and Analytics, the Senior Data Science Fellow will use highly detailed data management skills and highly refined analytical and problem-solving skills to research and manage data, compare, and analyze statistical information, define, and utilize statistical methods, work with big data, summarize results, manage database software, prepare reports, and design computer code. Experience working with private and sensitive personal information, including AWS, cloud server software migration, and database management is a plus. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partnering with a cross-functional team of data scientists, and product managers to deliver data-driven
  • Leveraging a broad range of technologies such as AWS, Python, R, Scala, SQL Server, and MySQL to reveal insights hidden within big
  • Developing procedures to ensure data quality and integrity, through demonstration of sound knowledge of different types of security
  • Building geographic information models using mapping tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and Google Earth Pro to train, evaluate, validate, and implement roadmap models through all phases of development.
  • Developing thought-provoking research which includes data mining, statistical models, predictive analytics, and the analysis of
  • Using statistical techniques to properly evaluate data sources to determine possible limitations in reliability or
  • Preparing data and present summaries, including table graphs and fact sheets, that describe techniques and
  • Define and utilize econometric methods to solve industry-specific problems in the solar energy
  • Analyzing and designing surveys and determine appropriate survey
  • Analyzing data using statistical software and techniques to solve problems caused by nonresponse and other sampling

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, managing, and manipulating large, complex datasets and data analytic programming and/or scripting in R, SQL, Python and Python machine learning ecosystem (NumPy, Pandas, SkLearn, ) including data visualization tools (Tableau, Jupyter, etc.)
  • Experience ingesting, processing, and visualizing data sources of varying types – both relational and
  • Demonstrable experience with software engineering principles and cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, BpaaS
  • Strong research, theory, and programming background with the ability to apply advanced knowledge on real world
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative analytics
  • Experience supporting complex data science and analytic
  • Experience identifying, recommending, and implementing continuous improvement

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years of experience in data
  • At least 3 years of experience writing statistical research
  • Strong coding skills in languages such as R, Python, SAS and/ or Stata and Tableau visualization
  • Experience utilizing notebooks (e.g., Jupyter, R Markdown, Zeppelin).
  • Experience applying various machine learning approaches (e.g., random forest, neural networks, support vector machines).
  • Prior experience working with databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, Neo4j).
  • Cloud server management and software development skills are a plus
  • Experience building geographic information models using mapping Tools – ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Pro to train, evaluate, validate, and implement roadmap models through all phases of development.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job normally operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and cloud-based software. Due to COVID-19, all Groundswell staff are currently working remotely until a re-entry plan is established and implemented.

 

EXPECTED HOURS

Groundswell’s workdays are Monday through Friday, and core hours are 9:30 AM  to 4:30 PM. This is a part-time position, and a regular work schedule that meets your coursework, teaching, or other responsibilities may be developed with your supervisor. This is anticipated to be a 12-month Fellowship.

 

TRAVEL

Occasional U.S. travel may be required for this position but is anticipated to be minimal.

 

SUPERVISION

The Senior Data Science Fellow will report to the Director, Data Science Research and Analytics.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a part-time position 28 hours per week with compensation paid on an hourly basis commensurate of experience ranging between $28.00 - $35.00 per hour and is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. You will be required to record all work time utilizing Groundswell’s time tracking system. You will be paid semi-monthly on the 15th and the last day of the month. This  position is eligible for the following benefits:

  • Monthly $45 cell phone reimbursement
  • Monthly $75 internet reimbursement
  • 24 hours of paid sick leave
