Position Summary:

The Research & Data Analyst will report to the Director of Research & Data Analysis and collaborate with a team engaged in innovative research designed to reveal racial inequities and shift narratives of power. The analyst will focus on providing relevant, rigorous, and actionable data for campaign development, policy formation, and initiative building. The position will highlight issues most impacted by systemic racial injustices within our primary program areas as well as strategic initiatives. They will also work in deep partnership with communities of color to create meaningful data.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with staff and external partners to design the most effective research and data analysis to move policy for more equitable outcomes.
  • Conduct research and data analysis for Catalyst California and strategic partner initiatives.
  • Communicate findings – through written reports, data visualizations, and presentations – so they are clear and impactful for policymakers and the lay person alike.
  • Participate in organization-wide planning, development, and communication activities.
  • Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required.
  • Master’s degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform essential job duties.
  • Two years’ experience conducting research through identifying measures through literature review and other means and creating research products.
  • Experience with community-based research is highly desired.
  • Two years' experience collecting and wrangling data into a database or other software.
  • Experience with statistical software, especially R, required. Experience with other programming languages to analyze quantitative data desired.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and SQL, highly desired.
  • Experience doing spatial analysis in R highly desired.

Candidate Profile, Skills, and Abilities

  • Awareness of inequities and their causes, and a sincere and demonstrated commitment to advancing social and/or racial justice for low-income communities of color in alignment with the values of Catalyst California.
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and tools of database systems to manage the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and competency in statistics.
  • Demonstrated skill in data visualization in static and interactive form, including knowledge of visual design principles, best practices, and proven standards for creating data visuals.
  • Ability to create maps and knowledge of how to work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Knowledge of data storytelling practices, including how to describe key data findings while integrating narrative from community being represented, respecting their preferred way of representation and telling their stories.
  • A strong attention to detail and ability to assure the quality of data in an analysis, required. Includes understanding of how methodological decisions affect data quality and findings.
  • A high degree of diplomacy, professionalism, sensitivity, and respect for the confidentiality of certain data and projects are required.
  • Strong communication skills in written and verbal English. Strong communication skills in written and verbal Spanish highly desired.
  • Must be able to travel locally and statewide.

Physical Requirements  

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Salary

In the spirit of pay transparency, the base salary range for this position is $65,000 - $83,000. When hired by Catalyst California, the selected candidate’s final salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, and/or experience. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the full salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical to allow for future and continued salary growth.
