Description

The mission of HSVB is to provide compassionate care, shelter, and advocacy for animals, while also promoting responsible pet ownership through education and outreach. Programs and services include adoption, wildlife rescue, a pet care clinic and pet support to help families keep their animals during times of need. All HSVB employees and volunteers are fear free certified and uphold the Five Freedoms. The goal is to find loving homes for all the pets in the shelter’s care.  Since 2020, HSVB has met or exceeded 90% live release rate —meeting “no-kill” qualifications.

The current operating budget is approximately $4.4M. 76% of operating revenue is derived from private donations, fundraising activities, revenues from Thrift Shops, adoption and clinic service fees and fees from Indian River County, as HSVB serves as the County’s animal sheltering service provider.  There is a staff of 68, three direct reports to the Executive Director, and more than 200 volunteers.

With Board enthusiasm for change and innovation, the new Executive Director will have the opportunity to plan and execute new and exciting programming focusing on community engagement and keeping pets with their families, to enhance health and well-being of the community’s animals. Further, the new leader will be charged with assessing all operations, procedures and policies to ensure that they are the most up-to-date and within animal welfare industry standard.

Reporting to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will uphold the mission and key values of HSVB and promote its goals, advising the Board of Directors in making the best decisions for the organization. Working knowledge of companion animal care and adoption issues; an understanding of compliance issues involving pertinent federal, state, and local regulations is desired. The Executive Director will take the leadership in the shelter operations, and, with the help of the employees, the shelter will be a state of the art adoption center, low fee spay/neuter clinic, and humane education outreach facility.

We seek a highly experienced leader with demonstrated vision and passion for the humane and ethical treatment of animals. Experience in a senior leadership role either reporting directly to or working closely with a Board of Directors is essential. The successful candidate will have financial management experience, demonstrated success as a fundraiser and exceptional communication skills.

Salary & Benefits:  $120,000 - $140,000, benefits including 75% coverage of health care cost, 403(b) with 3% match, and paid time off. Relocation assistance including temporary housing, if needed, will be provided.
