Description

City Gate Inc is a 501(c)3 nonprofit incorporated in October 2000 in Washington, DC with a strong and innovative track record over the past 24 years, providing a range of programming in a safe, structured environment where children and youth are empowered to realize their potential by strengthening academic knowledge, skills, and behaviors. Currently City Gate operates five program sites serving over 300 children and youth in its afterschool and summer programs.

The Position: Executive Director

City Gate seeks a dynamic, visionary leader committed to social justice and equity to develop, refine, and implement programs to serve economically disadvantaged youth and their families in Washington, DC and Prince George's County, MD.

City Gate: Mission, Vision, and Values

At City Gate, our mission is to engage and empower youth and families impacted by poverty to access the resources and opportunities of the larger community. We do this through our out-of-school time (OST) programs in high-need neighborhoods and Title I schools. Our multifaceted programs include academic enrichment related to literacy and STEAM subjects, educational expeditions to expand horizons and build social capital, and social-emotional learning (SEL) to foster self-esteem and positive relationships. Our programs are designed to close the opportunity/achievement gap and open a pathway to long-term educational and life-success.

This is reflected in the name City Gate, which captures our vision and core values of justice, inclusion, and equity. The ancient city gates that inspired our name were not simply physical entrances to cities, but quintessential grassroots institutions where elders conducted community business. The prophets insisted that the city gate be the place where the poor, the widow, and the orphan received justice, and the stranger or foreigner received welcome. This ancient vision of inclusion and empowerment for those on the margins is at the heart of what we do. City Gate seeks to translate this ancient ideal into a contemporary vision that affirms the value and dignity of every child. We seek to open the gate and provide a path to inclusion, opportunity, and equity so everyone can realize their potential and participate fully in our community.
