EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Seeking an experienced, creative, energetic, forward thinking and organized leader to serve as the Executive Director at Beacons, Inc.  The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management and oversight of the organization, as well as for providing support and planning for the strategic expansion and viability of Beacons, Inc. 

Beacons, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public benefit nonprofit corporation dedicated to bridging gaps to employment and the community for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD). Beacons is currently located in the heart of the Carlsbad business community.  Beacons was founded by a small group of parents of young adults with mild/moderate ID/DD who were exiting the local school districts with no good options for programs and services to fit their needs and their personal goals. Since our founding in 2018, Beacons has expanded twice in order to provide the needed and desired programs and services to adults with ID/DD. Beacons is a vendor of the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) to provide those programs and services, including vocational training and exploration, social activities, job coaching, individual person centered planning, and other activities, programs and services. We have outgrown our current space and are looking to relocate into a larger space in order to accommodate more clients and expand our current offering of programs and services.  Beacons is a growing organization, well known and respected in the community.  We are seeking an Executive Director to work hand in hand with the Board of Directors to lead this organization to the next phase of our development.  

Position Responsibilities:

Development/Fundraising:

  • Donor cultivation and development
  • Manage event planning for the Annual Fundraiser and other fundraising events during the year to meet annual fundraising goals
  • Grant writing
  • Work with Executive Cabinet on any future Capital Campaign

Supervision of Staff and Beacons Administration

  • Build, manage and inspire effective leadership teams by providing direction, guidance and coaching for staff and volunteers
  • Supervise all department directors and program/services coordinators
  • Provide strategic planning guidance to all departments while ensuring adherence to the program design
  • Overall responsibility for the administration of Beacons and its various business needs and activities, departments, services and programs 
  • Identify and implement best practices to improve internal systems aligned with future needs and budget realities
  • Monitor company operations and ensure employees and business practices comply with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Update and revise the Beacons Operations Manual and all HR/Department Training Manuals as needed

Oversight and Management of the Budget and other Financials of nonprofit

  • Work with Treasurer and accounting to track monthly/annual income/expenses including approval of expense reports
  • Complete and/or oversee completion of monthly billing/invoicing for all programs and services (including oversight of outstanding issues with SDRC).
  • Work directly with accounting/bookkeeping to troubleshoot any issues
  • Work with the Treasurer and President to report to BOD on monthly basis
  • Work with directors to develop and manage division budgets.

Board of Directors:

  • Work with the Executive Cabinet and Board of Directors to create and implement the strategic plan and promote activities that foster the organizational mission
  • Work with President to plan monthly board agenda and meetings
  • Create the Executive Directors monthly report to the BOD
  • Coordinate with Executive Cabinet as needed to troubleshoot any administrative or business related issues

PR/Marketing

Work with Board and staff to expand public’s awareness of Beacons, its options, news and successes through:

  • Branding, marketing and PR
  • Creation of brochures and other marketing materials 
  • Development of relationships with members of the press
  • Creation of a social media campaign with collaboration of division leaders
  • Creation of a marketing calendar for purposes of annual fundraising and outreach campaigns
  • Updating the website as needed or designate a staff member to do this on a regular basis

Facility Management

  • Supervise the Office Administrator
  • Oversee and manage the various insurance policies coverage and renewals and renewal of business and other licenses
  • Work with Executive Cabinet on any leasing or other financial or business related issues with current landlord
  • Work with Executive Cabinet on exploration and viability of relocating to a new larger location for Beacons and manage the relocation process.

Community Outreach

  • Develop relationships with local community and business leaders, including attending various meetings of interest and importance to Beacons.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local school districts to ensure that local district staff, families and students are familiar with Beacons and its options.
  • Ongoing communication with donors and families
  • Communication with the San Diego Regional Center, State Council on Developmental Disabilities and other entities committed to individuals with ID/DD.
  • Communication with local dignitaries and elected officials

 

Position Requirements:

  • At least three years demonstrated experience as an executive director, head administrator or equivalent administrative position leading a growing non-profit organization
  • Experience supporting a Board of Directors through agenda creation and completion of other executive level tasks.
  • Experience creating and managing corporate budgets with a solid understanding of financial performance metrics
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with fundraising and donor development for nonprofits including successful annual fundraising events, annual or capital campaigns, grant writing, strengthening of donor relationships, etc. 
  • Demonstrated time management, problem solving and organizational skills, with an attention to detail and follow-through.  
  • Experience managing a team of directors, administrators or the equivalent with a collaborative, inspirational and innovative management style.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing strategic plans including setting priorities and implementation of the vision and goals of the organization in order to sustain and grow the non-profit business. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications.
  • Innovative “outside the box” thinking to problem solve and implement solutions.
  • Proficient with use of technology: online and computer related programs and tools (including Google Suites docs/sheets/slides/forms, QuickBooks Online, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in relevant field. 
  • Successful completion of a LiveScan background check
  • Proof of Covid-19 Vaccination
  • Reliable transportation to the Beacons office site to arrive promptly on a daily basis with occasional travel for Beacons related business and a clean driving record in order to drive participants as needed.
  • Must be willing to work onsite during regular business hours.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with individuals with mild/moderate intellectual disabilities and their families and building a rapport with participants and their families.
  • Experience with managing an educational and/or training program

Compensation:

  • Salary $90,000 -$110,000 (DOE)
  • Full time, exempt position
  • 10 paid vacation days annually, plus approximately 10 paid holidays annually
  • Medical/dental/vision benefits available (100% paid for employee)
