Executive Director Job Description: Duties and Qualifications

An Executive Director, or Chief Executive, is in charge of overseeing the organization’s strategic vision and leading business decisions to drive growth. Duties include collaborating with the leadership team within the structure of staffing as well as the board members, implementing strategic plans for the organization’s development and managing relationships with stakeholders, community leaders and patrons.

Executive Director Skills and Qualifications

A candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications needed to manage their role effectively, including experience in a senior managerial role, in-depth knowledge of the industry and leadership qualities. Common skills and qualifications include:

  • Excellent understanding of finance-related performance standards

  • Proven ability to develop and execute financial strategies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of corporate and regulatory best practices

  • Organization and leadership skills

  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills

  • Passion for the creative arts and the community engagement

  • Experience in development for a non-profit organization including grant writing

  • Experience in development of membership growth initiatives

 TIME OFF

Full-time salaried employees become eligible for paid time off from work after 30 days of employment.

The CAC presents many special events and programs related to touring artist performances and events (collectively “events”) occurring outside of the traditional 8-5, Monday through Friday work week.   Salaried employees will from time to time be expected to perform job duties during these events without special or overtime compensation.

VACATION AND LEAVE

An employee is entitled to vacation, bereavement leave and sick leave based on the Cultural Activities Center policy manual.   The CAC observes national holidays including President's Day, Good Friday, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4 (official holiday date), Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.  Additionally, full-time, non-facilities employees receive paid time off on the day before and day after Thanksgiving, and three weeks of CAC closure dates including the last full week of July and two weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year's Day.  Actual dates determined annually.

HEALTH & RETIREMENT BENEFITS

After 30 days, full-time employee is eligible for hospitalization, dental, and HMO health plan with the CAC providing 80% of the cost and the employee assuming 20%.  After one year, employee is eligible for a SIMPLE IRA (401K) retirement plan.   CAC will match employee contributions up to 3% of salary.  Prior to eligibility, the employee shall receive detailed information about these benefits and the opportunity to ask questions about enrollment.

Previous management of a non-profit and/or arts and music curriculum is important.   A significant portion of the direct responsibility of the executive director shall include fundraising and community engagement on behalf of the CAC.  Therefore, previous experience in development and community engagement programs will be considered in determination of the applicant’s potential for employment.

The position shall remain open until filled.   Candidates’ resumes will be reviewed by the search committee and interviews will conducted with selected candidates by members of the search committee and the executive board of the CAC.   Compensation will be commensurate with experience relevant to the position.
