Description

BayLegal seeks an experienced DEI advocate with a demonstrated strong commitment to racial justice, social justice, and advancing equity across all identity markers to join BayLegal.  The work involves travel throughout the Bay Area and BayLegal’s regional offices. The DEI Manager will work closely with BayLegal’s DEI Committee to develop goals, priorities, and agreed upon work product. The DEI Manager will also work directly with the Executive Director, General Counsel and Director of Program and Advocacy to adopt and implement policies and procedures to effectuate the DEI values.  The DEI Manager reports to and is supported by the Executive Director.  This position is part of the management team and is a non-union position.  Currently, no staff reports directly to the DEI Manager.  See COVID-19 Temporary Remote work below.

As a DEI Manager, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Chair and work collaboratively with BayLegal’s DEI Committee to:
    • Establish annual and long-term goals and objectives, and determine the necessary steps and timeline for implementing agreed upon scope of work;
    • Perform the role of project manager for all goals and objectives established with the DEI Committee and be responsible for carrying out the hands-on work of the DEI Committee to effectuate those goals and objectives;
    • Communicate BayLegal’s DEI goals and work with BayLegall staff; and
    • Be the liaison for the broader BayLegal management team to help raise and resolve issues timely and effectively.
  • Serve as a manager liaison and support for BayLegal’s Affinity Groups (ex. BIPOC, LGBTQ+), including:
    • Establish a protocol for creating new and supporting existing affinity groups.
    • Provide administrative and managerial support for these groups in the broader BayLegal community.
    • Coordinate, support, and participate in meetings, if appropriate;
    • Help to identify and coordinate participation in appropriate affinity group outreach events;
    • Be the liaison for the broader management team to help raise and resolve issues timely and effectively.
  • Identify, create, and coordinate DEI trainings for all staff and DEI trainings for managers and supervisors;
  • Finalize BayLegal DEI mission and values statements;
  • Participate in and help facilitate annual planning and alignment across all of BayLegal’s programs, units, and practice areas in accordance with BayLegal’s mission and DEI values;
  • Participate in the onboarding of new staff members regarding BayLegal’s DEI values and commitment;
  • Work with BayLegal's development, grants and contracts, and communications team to promote BayLegal's mission and resource development that align with BayLegal’s mission and DEI values;
  • Engage in other tasks and projects that further BayLegal's mission and operations as a non-profit;
  • Learn about the diverse legal needs of low-income communities in the broader Bay Area and BayLegal’s work and mission to reduce homelessness, enhance stability, break systemic cycles of poverty, and address social injustice;

 Requirements/Qualifications/About the Successful Candidate:

  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, age, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • Social Work degree preferred.
  • Deep knowledge, understanding, and demonstrated learning of critical race theory.
  • Experience and strong understanding of DEI principles, including intersectionality and the 4 I’s of Oppression, and experience with implementing principles and values in practice.
  • Strong project management skills and experience, ability to be detail oriented while maintaining and cultivating big picture vision and consistency.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with dynamic teams and diverse constituencies.
  • Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project

Temporary COVID-19 remote work: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, all BayLegal employees are primarily working remotely. While BayLegal has implemented detailed health and safety protocols to minimize risk of exposure and has an evolving plan for reopening our local offices, we anticipate remaining primarily remote throughout much of 2021. All employees are expected to be available to travel to BayLegal offices and services locations as needed and in compliance with public health advisories. Employees are expected to reside in California and must be able to commute to the physical BayLegal base location or service delivery location within the San Francisco Bay Area.

While BayLegal remains primarily remote, all employees are issued BayLegal computers and provided appropriate supplies. BayLegal has implemented and continues to explore additional technologies to make working remotely as efficient and connected as possible.  All employees receive a flat-rate monthly amount to reimburse for work-related use of personal IT equipment, including internet and home. BayLegal is open to providing flexibility regarding work schedules and part-time or full-time employment to the extent feasible for the position.
