Program Overview  

More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. live with HIV with approximately 38,000 new diagnoses each year, despite advances in HIV prevention and treatment

HRC is committed to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic and HIV-related stigma through strategic partnerships with the HIV and public health community — including community-based organizations, health departments, and national partners — to design, implement and evaluate multi-year strategies addressing the epidemic; utilizing storytelling to advocate, engage and mobilize communities most impacted by HIV and AIDS in the U.S., including young gay and bisexual men and transgender women of color while focusing on public education and research opportunities.

Position Responsibilities

HRC is seeking a Director of HIV and Health Equity to lead the organization’s work to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic and HIV-related stigma, as well as improving efforts for HIV prevention, treatment and care.

Program Design and Management

  • Manage the creation and execution of new strategies and resources, publications, and educational campaigns that address the current realities of HIV and other health disparities facing LGBTQ people, especially communities of color and transgender people.
  • Elevate the voices of individuals and advocates working with communities most impacted by the epidemic.
  • Develop educational programs to end the stigma around HIV and sexual health.
  • Develop and create training curriculum.
  • Maintain subject matter expertise and serve and serve as internal and external expert on HIV and health equity related issues.
  • Oversee, expand and evaluate HIV and Health Equity outreach and marketing efforts.

External Communications

  • Serve as the lead spokesperson for HRC on HIV and HIV Equity issues in a variety of formats including panels, conferences and in the media.
  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative research to produce original content in the form of blog posts, infographics, issue briefs, and policy memos.


Organizational and Movement Leadership

  • Deepen strategic partnerships and lead innovative capacity building and advocacy.
  • Bring expertise and capacity around HIV and other health disparities to colleagues across the organization and movement, identifying opportunities to complement programmatic work and maximize resources.
  • Collaborate with government affairs and policy team to engage coalition partners in strategic efforts to build upon and amplify HRC's HIV programmatic work.

Fundraising

  • Work closely with members of the Development team to maintain existing grant funding and secure new sources of revenue.

Management

  • Manage, mentor and support a team of two.

Candidate Qualifications, Competencies and Attributes

All candidates should bring creativity, curiosity, excellent judgment, compassion, and strong emotional intelligence. Candidates should be highly organized, detail-oriented and thrive handling multiple projects simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. 

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent in experience) is required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five to seven years of experience in public health or a related field.
  • Subject matter expertise in HIV policy and advocacy.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop trusting, transparent and positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Proven experience working collaboratively with internal and external partners to fulfill programmatic goals.
  • Excellent public speaking skills; ability to convey complex information to a variety of audiences.
  • Track record of managing, coaching and developing staff.
  • Strong commitment to HRC’s mission and goals, especially to enhancing the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people living with HIV.
  • Ability to lead, model and embed, equity diversity and inclusion principles within the team and external relationships.
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Apps (Gmail, Google Docs and Drive.)
  • Flexibility with work schedule; must be willing to travel 20% of the time and work evening and weekend hours.

All positions at the Human Rights Campaign may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply. The person in this role and all staff are employees of the c4, the Human Rights Campaign.
