Description

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is seeking a creative, detail-oriented, and skillful professional to support our organization as Director of Development.

Our aim is to find a candidate who shares our passion for raising awareness of critical global issues and is experienced with the ins and outs of development and fundraising. The Pulitzer Center works with some of the world's most talented journalists, photographers, and filmmakers. This position is primarily remote, but may occasionally be asked to travel to events.

The Director of Development (DD) oversees all of the Pulitzer Center’s fundraising efforts, and the collection, curation and dissemination of impact across the organization. The DD builds relationships with individuals and organizations to secure philanthropic support. In their strategic role, the DD is responsible for creating feasible long term fundraising, branding, and impact goals that provide for the long-term needs of the Pulitzer Center and its programs. This position reports to the Chief Finance and Operations Officer (CFOO).

 

Responsibilities

Management: Provides strong leadership and effective management for the development team, creating an environment of respect, creativity, opportunities for growth and professional education.

  • Manages the development team’s successful execution of project assignments to support the organization’s development goals.
  • Organizes team roles and evaluates employee performance.
  • Documents project and goal progress with regular reporting to senior management.
  • Performs employee reviews and assessments
  • Manages the Fundraising Team budget.

DevelopmentWorks with the CEO, board members and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive multi-year development strategy that includes growth of foundation grants, major gifts, planned giving, endowment giving, and online donations.

  • Creates and enhances relationships with (potential) donors to ensure current and future funding.
  • Works with the Finance Team to track revenue and forecast annual projections on a monthly basis.
  • Maintains timely research related to funding sources and trends to help position the organization in relationship to its peer organizations and ahead of major funding changes or trends.
  • Oversees a database of current and potential financial donors, including corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  • Grant Management duties include tracking spending and progress towards promised goals on open grants.

Fundraising: Supervises all fundraising services, including gift and acknowledgment processing, customer service and prospect management, data analytics and reporting.

  • Sets annual fundraising goals and revenue budgets according to short- and long-term goals.

  • Produces relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to donors and the public.
  • Researches potential sources of, and applies for, grants and public funding.
  • Plans and executes all fundraising activities including campaigns and events.
  • Collaborates with the communications team to develop and execute a digital fundraising strategy.
  • Maintains timely and accurate fundraising, grant and donor reports for all internal and external audiences.
  • Maintains all legal compliance pertaining to fundraising.

ImpactOversees the collection, curation and dissemination of impact across the organization.

Participation in efforts and projects that support Pulitzer Center culture and values: This may include task forces, training sessions, meetings, committees, special projects, organizational events, and any other activities that support the Pulitzer Center. Participates in the planning processes for the organization.

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years experience within the nonprofit development and/or fundraising field.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience managing a team that raised more than $5M per year.
  • Special consideration given to individuals who have worked in the journalism field and/or have supported journalism organizations.
  • Experience managing a team of three or more staff members for a minimum of 4 years.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational, task, and time management skills.
  • Experience using two or more of the following software systems and technologies:
    • Google Docs and Sheets
    • Salesforce or other CRMs
    • Project Management systems such as Asana or Trello
