Primary Purpose:

As a leading funder in Oregon, Oregon Community Foundation is committed to engaging communities in our own work and is committed to supporting community engagement efforts that bring together diverse perspectives to strengthen Oregon and improve lives for all Oregonians. OCF’s Director of Community Engagement oversees the Foundation’s Community Engagement Branch within the Community Impact Department. The Director is responsible for setting strategic direction for OCF’s community engagement work and managing the community engagement team and portfolio of programs aimed at strengthening communities through community-based problem-solving, bridge building, and leadership development.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Leadership-                                                                        Percentage of Time: 40%
  • In partnership with the Chief Community Impact Officer, lead strategy development for OCF’s community engagement work including community engagement priorities outlined in OCF’s strategic plan.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Community Engagement Branch, consisting of 14 staff members (with direct supervision of four staff members), one of the four branches within OCF’s Community Impact Department.
  • Ensure the effective operation of the branch and its alignment with the strategies and culture within the department and organization, identify opportunities and set branch priorities and goals, and foster a collaborative team spirit.
  • Ensure that OCF’s community engagement strategy and programs are aligned with OCF’s core values of a spirit of community; wise stewardship; collaborative action; and equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Serve on the Community Impact Department’s Leadership Team responsible for department-level visioning, planning, and coordination.
  • Champion community engagement across all OCF operations by identifying connections and opportunities across the Community Impact Department as well as with other departments to increase OCF’s focus and skills regarding community engagement.

 

  1. Program Management-                                                 Percentage of Time: 40%
  • Serve as the lead staff for the Community Engagement Committee of the board, including coordinating with the committee chair, developing and overseeing the committee budget, setting meeting agendas, and overseeing the production of committee materials.
  • Manage the program teams responsible for implementation of OCF’s statewide Community Engagement programs including the Latino Partnership Program, Community 101, and GO Kids.
  • Manage the program teams responsible for OCF’s responsive grantmaking programs encompassing over $10 million in grants annually through multiple grant programs, including the Community Grants Program, Community Funds, and Strategic Opportunity Grants.
  • Manage the program staff responsible for OCF’s volunteer program consisting of over 1,600 volunteers statewide, including OCF’s eight regional Leadership Councils.

 

  1. Relationship Building & Communications-             Percentage of Time: 20%
  • Build relationships with volunteer, community engagement, and civic organizations in order to identify opportunities to strengthen the fabric of community engagement efforts in Oregon.
  • Along with other OCF staff, foster and strengthen OCF’s relationships with diverse communities and community leaders across Oregon.
  • Speak persuasively about OCF’s community engagement programs, priorities and vision to internal and external stakeholders and audiences, including OCF volunteers and donors, funding partners, and community groups.
  • Represent OCF at local and national conferences and events to share OCF’s community engagement programs and priorities.
  • Make succinct and meaningful reports to OCF’s board and committees.
  • Coordinate convenings and conferences related to community engagement for partners, grantees and others.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in public administration, non-profit management, social sciences, or equivalent experience.
  • 7 years’ experience in community engagement, nonprofit management, or grantmaking.
  • 5 years’ experience managing teams, including staff supervision and budget management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, participation in, and champion of community engagement and voluntarism.
  • Track record of being a bridge builder; experience working across diverse communities toward common goals.
  • Commitment to the power of community-based problem-solving, engaging impacted communities in the work, and leading from behind.
  • Cultural agility skills necessary to work effectively with diverse people, teams and communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including demonstrated experience in facilitating groups.
  • Statewide knowledge of Oregon preferred, including existing relationships and connections to one or more of Oregon’s diverse communities.
  • Project management skills and experience, including coordinating teams at every level of an organization and in communities.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to analyze, think critically and explain alternatives clearly - adept at problem solving.
  • Adept at use of technology including Microsoft Office Word and experience working in a network environment with an integrated database. Knowledge of Excel, Power Point, Publisher and other programs a plus.
