DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST

ABOUT THE CENTER: The National Humanities Center is a private, nonprofit organization, and the only
independent institute dedicated exclusively to advanced study in the humanities. The Center provides
essential support for the humanities, encouraging excellence in scholarship and teaching while affirming
the importance of the humanities in American life. The Center’s mission is accomplished through its
residential fellowship program, educational programming and public engagement. The Center is
supported by the generosity of individual donors, grants, corporate philanthropy, and institutional
sponsors.

JOB SUMMARY: The Development Specialist is responsible for supporting the Center’s strategic
fundraising efforts by coordinating programs aimed at targeting donors and prospects for: (1) annual
giving, (2) planned giving and (3) institutional sponsorship support. This position also functions as a
valuable member of the Institutional Advancement team, which encompasses fundraising,
communication and outreach, as well as public engagement and media asset oversight. The Development
Specialist in particular provides assistance to and collaborates with NHC’s Vice President of Institutional
Advancement in managing donor data, as well as supporting the identification, cultivation and direct
engagement and stewardship of donors and sponsors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Research and identify prospective new donors and sponsors and proactively initiate engagement
• Foster positive relationships with current and prospective donors and sponsors, including
engaging in consistent outreach, in-person meetings, donor luncheons, coordinating and
facilitating donor events and other cultivation and fundraising activities, as assigned
• Work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
• Create, compose and edit written materials
• Design and/or assist in the design, production and distribution of fundraising materials and case
statements, as well as donor and sponsor correspondence and solicitation proposals
• Provide financial stewardship and reporting to donors; respond to donor inquiries with accurate
and timely information and ensure appropriate expenditure of donor funds
• Provide primary creative oversight and implementation management of the Center’s Annual Fund
campaign
• Participate in and assist with special events and coordinate event-day logistics, including
stewardship with donors and prospects in attendance
• In conjunction with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, establish accurate and
realistic budgets for fundraising activities and analyze outcomes
• Assist in a variety of administrative support activities for the Institutional Advancement Team,
including management of vendor relationships, provide support for the Center’s social media
activities, research and develop constituent lists, donor data management and reporting and
budget tracking

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• A strong interest in the Center’s mission
• Bachelor’s degree or higher
• At least five years of experience directly related to development and fundraising for nonprofit
organizations
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to present oneself with
confidence professionally and engagingly and clearly communicate orally and in writing
• Excellent client relations and constituent engagement skills
• Ability to plan, organize and execute a range of related public initiatives and special events
• Data management and computer skills, including the use of relevant software applications, such as
Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge, Wealth Point or similar platforms
• Experience researching and pursuing funding programs and opportunities available through local,
state and federal programs
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with excellent planning, prioritizing, and
follow-up skills
• Ability to occasionally work additional hours, including evenings and weekends

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to regularly pull and push a minimum of 10 lbs.
• Must be able to regularly lift 15 lbs. and occasionally more than 25 lbs.
• Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time

The National Humanities Center offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits including a 403(b)
contribution, and a collegial community work environment with opportunities for professional

range from $50,000 to $55,000 based on experience and qualifications.
