Description

Summary of Position
Now more than ever, states have a critical role to play in driving our country forward. The Impact Project (TIP) does this by advancing economic and democracy policies that improve the quality of life for working- and middle-class people. We are 100% focused at the state level and we currently work in AZ, CO, FL, GA, ME, MD, MI, MN, NV, NM, NC, PA, VA, and WI.

The Deputy Director drives our work in up to four of our states. They are the glue that holds our team together, supervising the State Directors, working side by side with their colleague Deputy Directors managing other states, leveraging the expertise of TIP policy, data, and communications staff, and providing a critical communications link to the senior team. You will support strong leaders and make day to day judgment calls about the right balance of advocacy, communications, and organizing needed.
This position reports to and works closely with a Vice President of Advocacy. This position is full time and considered exempt for federal overtime purposes.

What You’ll Do
Drive strategy and impact across your states:
-Manage 3-4 State Directors, coaching them as they learn and advance TIP’s approach, developing their state theory of change and plans, vetting proposed investments, and driving implementation.
-Serve on the leadership team, playing an integral role in modeling our core values - agile, bold, curious, creative disruptors, and dig deep - and fostering organizational culture; support the work of the senior team by providing timely intel and troubleshooting challenges.
-Develop a deep understanding of the states so you can effectively advise staff.
-Get your hands dirty, working side by side with your team as they drive campaigns and create new capacities where they don’t exist.
-Infuse state work with new organizing, communications, and advocacy ideas and strategies, driving directors to stretch beyond business as usual and to find ways around obstacles.
-Lead your team’s annual budget planning and coach them to deliver high quality spending proposals with strong deliverables that clearly tie back to the state strategy.
-Ensure any multi-state investments are well-connected to your team and their day to day operations in the state.
-During non-COVID times, conduct site visits to see your team in action, engage with partners, model our values, and provide on-the-job training.
-Provide honest in-the-moment and ongoing feedback to State Directors.

Build the team:
-Drive new staff onboarding, ensuring each person receives tailored background information for their states, the history of our engagement, and hands on coaching about TIP’s approach.
-Plan team meetings and periodic in-person convenings and trainings, reinforcing our core values in content and approach.
-Lead recruitment for job openings on your team, do an initial screen of applicants, and shepherd candidates through the interview process.
