About Women's Audio Mission: Women’s Audio Mission (WAM), is a San Francisco-based nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive individuals in music production and the recording arts, a field in which these individuals are critically underrepresented (less than 5%). WAM uses music and media to attract 4,000+ women/girls/ gender-expansive individuals a year to music technology studies/careers, and believes that women/gender-expansive individual's participation in creative technology will expand the voice of music and media, ensuring that their views and ideas are conveyed in popular culture. Founded in 2003, WAM has grown exponentially to serve 50+ school partners across three school districts and includes two recording studios we own in San Francisco, an educational lab space in Oakland, and global reach online to 30+ countries. WAM’s staff consists of teaching artists, audio professionals, and passionate, hardworking individuals in a combination of full time, part time, and contract roles.

WAM’s professional recording studios are the only studios in the world entirely built and run by women/gender-expansive individuals. Our studio and engineers have worked on projects with Sheila E., Neko Case, Kronos Quartet, Toro y Moi, Margaret Cho, Tune-Yards, Beyonce’s Band, Angelique Kidjo (Grammy win), Academy Award-winning soundtrack to the film Dirty Wars, Mary J. Blige/Hillary Clinton Interview and more.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Chief of Staff (CoS) will be responsible for the coordination of the essential business activities of the organization (talent, budgeting/planning, communications, performance management, data, culture, etc.) to ensure that the organization is operating most optimally in terms of productivity and effectiveness. The CoS will support the ED by researching and gathering information across the organization and with external stakeholders and provide feedback to ensure that the ED has the information needed to respond to inquiries quickly and make sound decisions. Candidates who are comfortable assessing and prioritizing a large volume of tasks and inquiries and at the same time protecting both the ED’s time and organization’s resources are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be someone who can passionately support our mission of advancing women, girls and gender-expansive individuals in the fields of music, media and technology and has proven experience in a business management role with a focus on executive-level advising and interdepartmental communication.

Primary Objectives and Responsibilities:

Efficacy, Strategic Partnership & Support:

  • Act as strategic thought partner with the ED.
  • Serve as a liaison between the ED, staff and Board of Directors.
  • Prepare ED with the necessary research, information, materials and communications to effectively engage with staff, board, donors, potential donors, partners and potential partners and when appropriate, serve as proxy.
  • Recommend ways to optimize the way the ED and program teams function in and across the organization.
  • Partner with ED to define and advance organization annual and quarterly priorities.

Coordinate Key Business Processes and Internal Communications:

  • Build an understanding of the critical work that is happening across the organization and surface strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, including knowledge and skill gaps and help create solutions to address them.
  • Improve current processes and coordinate organizational procedures for optimized efficiency and productivity.
  • Develop and implement an internal communication and engagement strategy best suited to communicate key organizational information to staff and Board of Directors.
  • Draft internal and external communications on behalf of ED to keep key constituents informed.

Talent & Ongoing Performance Management

  • Oversee onboarding and internal training of staff in WAM systems.
  • Partner with program directors to ensure that the process for job postings, interviews, background checks, team onboarding and performance evaluations, etc. is a consistent and documented process.
  • Support the staff performance evaluation process and make sure the process clearly assesses performance relative to org-wide key performance indicators and program goals.

Team Culture & Experience

  • Partner with senior leadership to build a strong team culture and a safe, supportive and nurturing environment that fosters team productivity and excellence.
  • Plan and manage org-wide meetings or retreats including creating agendas and any presentation materials required.
  • Provide ED and program directors with recommendations and consultation to improve teamwork.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in a business or executive management role and requiring strong lateral management, relationship building, project and/or executive management, or corporate strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and directing multiple teams and departments
  • Strong project reporting skills and proven success with interdepartmental communications.
  • Experience with budget management and analysis and a business mind that consistently prioritizes the organization and protects its resources.
  • Previous experience working with mission-driven non-profits and mission-driven for-profits.
  • Previous experience working with non-profit boards, both advisory and fiduciary.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Location: This position is currently, due to COVID, a combination of remote and occasional in-person work in WAM’s facilities in San Francisco and Oakland. Post COVID, this position will transition to work in both our Oakland and San Francisco facilities, with some travel throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and occasional travel nationally.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary in the $65,000 - $75,000 range commensurate with individual’s experience and education. All full-time employees receive a competitive benefits package.
