The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial matters of the organization, managing a finance staff of three. The CFO reports to the CEO, is a key member of the executive team, and works closely with the senior leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization. We are seeking a special finance leader who is experienced providing financial leadership in nonprofits, is highly motivated to help make a positive social impact, and enjoys a continually evolving environment expanding into new verticals and revenue models.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive the financial strategy for an exciting and complex nonprofit.
• Act as a true business partner to the CEO, executive management and other key team members, providing timely response to inquiries.
• Be dedicated to our social mission, understand nonprofit funding, and can assess and provide insight on performance against Benetech’s long-term strategy.
• Develop tools and systems in conjunction with our information technology staff, to provide critical financial and operational information and make actionable recommendations.
• Understand key program drivers, supply essential and timely reporting and financial and business analysis, and engage with the management team to drive understanding of financial issues, including forecasts and plans.
• Be the essential resource for the Board of Directors in understanding and communicating key financial results and implications as well as risk management issues.
• Act as the organization’s chief compliance officer ensuring that we are meeting all of our obligations under nonprofit law, federal and nonprofit accounting standards, and contractual commitments to funders and donors.
• Lead the finance team, including accounting, contracts and procurement, to ensure the finance team meet Benetech’s standards of doing the right things right.
• Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for government, foundation and other funders, and the Board of Directors.
• Lead the annual budget process.
• Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns.
• Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
• Oversee banking relationships.
• Represent Benetech as a leading financial voice in the field of social entrepreneurship and nonprofit management, and to larger constituencies such as the Silicon Valley tech community.

Qualifications

• A minimum of a Bachelor degree; CPA and/or MBA would be a plus.
• Demonstrated leadership ability as a CFO and in financial management and accounting in the nonprofit sector. Hands on responsibility at a small to medium company (~$5-25 million budget) preferred.
• Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of financial management strategies.
• Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organizational skills.
• Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting preferred. Ideally would have awareness of government contracting obligations including indirect rate calculations and government contractor audit requirements.
• Experience working with information technology staff to utilize and configure finance and accounting software packages and/or online services.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent team management skills.
