San Francisco-based Humanity United has received a $50 million commitment from eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife, Pam, in support of its global anti-slavery efforts, Reuters reports.
Announced at the Trust Women conference, the commitment doubles an earlier commitment by the couple in support of the organization. Established in 2005 as part of the Omidyar Group, Humanity United is a U.S.-based foundation dedicated to building peace and advancing human freedom. Chaired by Pam Omidyar, the organization helped launch the Freedom Fund, the first private donor fund dedicated to ending modern slavery; the policy advocacy group Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking; and, as part of a public-private partnership, a competition aimed at generating innovative solutions to human trafficking.
According to the 2014 Global Slavery Index released earlier this month, nearly 36 million men, women, and children are victims of modern slavery.
“One of the greatest challenges of this era is the abolition of slavery globally in all of its forms,” said Humanity United CEO Randy Newcomb. “Pam and Pierre…have agreed to commit another $50 million to this cause and to this effort.”
