AGCI was founded in 1989 and is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) organization that supports staff and partners working to implement a mission that is international in scope yet grounded in local contexts and problem domains. As an "Institute Without Walls," AGCI staff and consultants are based in a variety of locations across the United States.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Overview: Full-Time
Location: The position can be remote anywhere within the continental United States.
Travel Requirements: 3-4 trips per year within the U.S.
Position Title: Accountant
AGCI’s Accountant is a critical member of AGCI’s Accounting and Finance team who manages daily accounting tasks and procedures, maintains accurate and complete financial records, and supports AGCI’s Controller in generating timely and accurate financial data and reporting. The Accountant brings expertise, accuracy, integrity to AGCI’s day-to-day accounting operations, works to strengthen and scale accounting procedures, and works in close partnership with the Controller to ensure that all daily, monthly, and annual accounting tasks and procedures are completed in a timely manner and to the highest standards of quality.
The Accountant works in close partnership with AGCI’s Controller, Vice President, Finance and Operations, and staff across the organization, and reports to the Controller.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the full-cycle accounting process, including A/P, A/R, and GL activities.
- Maintain the General Ledger and ensure accurate coding of all financial transactions.
- Monitor and reconcile bank, credit card, and investment accounts.
- Prepare and submit donor and funder invoices and monitor A/R aging.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Process payables, including employee expense reports, reimbursements, and vendor invoices in accordance with AGCI policies.
- Maintain balance sheet schedules for fixed assets, prepaids, deferred revenue.
- In close partnership with program and project operations staff, assist with grant financial reporting and budget tracking efforts.
- As requested, support budgeting and forecasting efforts for AGCI’s programs, projects, and organization-wide.
- Support risk mitigation and ensure adherence to internal controls by maintaining proper documentation and compliance with AGCI’s Signatory Policy and the Internal Control Matrix.
- Assist in annual independent audit preparation and process by compiling schedules and responding to auditor requests.
- Contribute to special projects and process improvements, in partnership with other members of the Finance and Operations team.
- Ensure vendor files are adequately maintained (W-9 collection, payment and contact information regularly reviewed and updated).
- In partnership with the Controller, prepare and file annual vendor 1099 forms.
- In coordination with Controller, support semi-monthly payroll allocation entries.
- Other duties, as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field required (preference for a degree in Accounting)
- A minimum of four-five years of experience serving as Staff Accountant or an Accountant, preferably with a nonprofit organization.
- A proven track record working with general ledger functions and being an integral part of the month-end and year-end close.
- A strong working knowledge of nonprofit accounting and the generally accepted accounting principles, GAAP.
- Experience working with accounts payable systems such as, Ramp or Bill.com
- Familiarity with federal regulations, such as CFR, FTR, etc.
- A commitment to working in a dynamic and rapidly growing organization; and a demonstrated ability to manage competing and evolving priorities in a fast-paced setting.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated experience working with QuickBooks Online, experience working in other accounting software (such as, for example, Sage, Procas, or Deltek Costpoint) preferred.
- Self-motivated to work in a remote environment.
- Availability for travel within the United States, sometimes on short notice.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
The envisioned start date for this position is April/May 2026. AGCI operates a physical, primary office in Basalt, Colorado, with staff working from other states as part of its “Institute Without Walls” approach. Remote work within the United States is permitted in this role.
Compensation: Anticipated salary range is $70,000-85,000.
