Fractional CFO / VP of Finance
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Engagement Type: Fractional / Part-Time (10–20 hours/week)
Location: Washington, DC preferably
Position Overview
The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) seeks a senior financial leader at the CFO or VP of Finance level to provide hands-on, part-time leadership of the organization’s financial operations. This role will actively manage key finance functions, strengthen internal processes, ensure compliance with federal grants and nonprofit regulations, and provide the CEO and senior leadership with clear financial visibility to support mission-driven decision-making.
Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Execution: Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial reporting. Ensure timely, accurate accounting and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards.

Grant & Compliance Oversight: Lead federal grant compliance (2 CFR 200), assist with proposal budgets, and coordinate audits and IRS reporting.

Board & Executive Support: Provide clear, actionable financial insights to the CEO, COO, and Board; translate complex data into strategic recommendations.

Process & Systems Improvement: Optimize financial workflows, reporting tools, and systems integrations. Collaborate with internal finance staff to improve operational efficiency.

Mentorship & Team Collaboration: Guide Finance Director and Grants Manager in execution of financial processes, supporting a high-performing finance function.
Qualifications
Required:
-
10+ years of progressive nonprofit financial leadership experience

Proven expertise in federal grant management, fund accounting, and nonprofit compliance

Hands-on experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting

Strong ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders
Preferred:
-
CPA or MBA
-
Experience with Tribal nations, health systems, or advocacy organizations

Familiarity with Indian Health Service, HHS, or other federal health funding

Expertise in financial systems (e.g., Sage Intacct) and CRM integrations
Engagement Details

Fractional, part-time role (~10–20 hours per week)

Initial engagement: 6–12 months with possibility of extension

Remote with periodic in-person collaboration
