Cone Health Foundation (CHF) – Driven by Equity, Guided by Community – seeks a strategic, community-centered, and equity-driven leader to serve as its next President. The ideal candidate will:

  • Set vision and strategy that advances health equity across Greensboro and the Triad.
  • Build trusted relationships with community partners, grantees, and peer funders.
  • Strengthen operations, financial stewardship, and grant practice with clear metrics and accountability.
  • Inspire and develop a high-performing, diverse team.

Navigate governance and alignment with the Cone Health system while maintaining CHF’s mission focus.

 

Mission: Cone Health Foundation eliminates health inequities by advocating for and investing in community‑driven solutions. CHF overlays its pillars with issue areas that serve communities most impacted by inequities, including access to health care, food, education, economic mobility, and safe and healthy housing.

Cone Health Foundation invests in community-driven solutions and advocates for systems and policy change at the local and state levels. The Foundation works in partnership with community-based organizations, civic leaders, policy makers, and the philanthropic community, centering the voices and experiences of those in Greensboro who have been historically marginalized.

Reporting Structure: The President serves as the chief executive officer of the Foundation, reports to a 17-person Board of Directors, and provides staff support to the Board, the Executive Committee, and other committees as assigned. The President establishes goals, directs day‑to‑day activities, and leads staff performance and development. The role maintains a close working relationship with Cone Health leadership to explore alignment in program, advocacy, and grantmaking.

Total Staff and Budget: The Foundation operates with a staff of 6 (including the President), a 2026 grants budget of $4.3 million, and an annual operating budget of $1.5 million.

Compensation: The salary is commensurate with experience and begins in the $240,000 range. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, short and long-term disability insurance; a well-being program; 401(a) retirement, 403(b) savings, and 457(b) deferred compensation plans; leadership incentive plan; car allowance; 40 days to be used for vacation, holiday, and sick time; and paid parental leave.

Working Environment/Location: Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, with strong community presence expected. The Foundation values engagement with partners and peers.

Key Responsibilities of the President

Strategy and Governance

  • Work with the Board and staff to develop and maintain strategies and policies that drive mission achievement. Provide regular strategic and financial updates and support Board decision‑
  • Continue to delineate CHF’s role and relationship with Cone Health and ensure alignment that honors CHF’s mission and community‑driven approach.

Operations, Finance, and Investment Stewardship

  • Plan and direct day‑to‑day operations. Prepare annual grants and operating budgets and report performance to the Board of Directors. Ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and bylaws.
  • Partner with investment professionals to steward assets, understand portfolio allocation and instruments, and translate financial strategy into grant capacity.

Grantmaking and Learning

  • Oversee the work of staff across CHF’s pillars by setting strategic direction and ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s mission. While direct management of day-to-day activities rests with designated staff, the President is responsible for developing and owning the consolidated framework of health equity improvement metrics, monitoring overall progress, and driving continuous improvement across all initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the grantmaking process by regularly evaluating practices, soliciting feedback, and implementing changes that enhance effectiveness. Ensure the Foundation remains responsive and adaptable to evolving community needs, adjusting strategies and processes to maximize impact and equity.

Community Partnership and Convening

  • Represent CHF in the community as a community‑based, community‑driven foundation that listens to and is guided by the people most impacted by health inequities. Cultivate strategic relationships with coalitions, community leaders, government stakeholders, and peer funders. Convene partners to accelerate systems change, including education about health equity and place‑based solutions.
  • Enhance visibility and communications to differentiate CHF’s story, funding strategy, and its distinct community‑centered role from other Cone entities.

Advocacy and Policy Alignment

  • Lend CHF’s voice and reputation to advance policies that close gaps in health equity, building on CHF’s leadership in Medicaid expansion and social drivers of health. Maintain statewide relationships and coalitions that enable identified priorities.

Team Leadership and Culture

  • Lead, coach, and develop staff. Set clear goals, assignments, and structure. Foster a culture of humility, inquiry, and continuous learning.
  • Foster a cohesive and collaborative team environment that values diversity and mutual support.
  • Develop and implement succession strategies to ensure organizational continuity and leadership development.

The Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will bring a strong alignment with the Foundation’s mission, vision, and core values, as well as:

  • Strategic leadership with a record of systems change and coalition building.
  • Financial acumen and comfort working with investment professionals and budgets.
  • Nonprofit or philanthropy leadership experience; five to ten years in senior management in foundation management or comparable field preferred.
  • Community credibility and a relational style that listens well and honors community voice.
  • Governance and board management skills, including committee engagement and recruitment.
  • Advocacy fluency, comfort with policy environments, and willingness to stand up for mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, lead, and manage a high-performing, diverse team, setting clear goals, fostering professional growth, and building a positive organizational culture.
  • Leadership qualities that include humility, adaptability, courage, and integrity.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a proven ability to inspire and motivate teams and stakeholders.
  • Healthcare system familiarity is beneficial but not required.
  • Place‑based understanding of Greensboro or North Carolina is a plus.
  • A graduate degree in business administration, nonprofit management, health care administration, or a relevant field is strongly preferred.
