Full-Time, Exempt
Position Summary:
George Washington’s Mount Vernon is seeking a dynamic and strategic Membership Manager to oversee all aspects of the membership program. The Membership Manager will be responsible for driving membership acquisition, managing renewals and lapsed member engagement, and ensuring exceptional stewardship of current members. This position supervises two part-time Membership Associates who serve as onsite ambassadors for the membership program and provide concierge-level service to all members.The ideal candidate is a relationship builder, data-informed strategist, and passionate advocate for member engagement and philanthropy. This highly visible role collaborates with multiple departments and serves as a key representative of Mount Vernon’s mission and values.

Compensation:
$70,000-$85,000 yearly
Key Responsibilities:
Membership Strategy
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual membership plan with clear objectives and performance metrics, in collaboration with our third-party membership consultant.
  • Evaluate and refine membership levels, benefits, and pricing to enhance value and encourage growth.
  • Design and execute strategies for acquisition, renewal, and re-engagement of lapsed members, in collaboration with our third-party membership consultant.
  • Oversee membership processing systems and ensure data integrity and efficient workflows.
Membership Sales and Renewals
  • Oversee online and onsite membership sales, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for prospective and existing members.
  • Build personal relationships with Regent’s Circle members and actively work to upgrade members at the highest levels.
  • Monitor membership trends and adjust tactics to increase conversion and retention rates.
  • Collaborate and liaise with other departments to promote membership and membership sales via digital campaigns, onsite materials, and special promotions.
  • Manage an incentive program for membership sales by other departments
Onsite Experience and Concierge Service
  • Lead the Members First initiative, ensuring members receive priority access, exclusive discounts, and exceptional hospitality.
  • Supervise and support part-time Membership Associates in delivering concierge-level service and representing Mount Vernon at onsite locations.
  • Actively engage with members onsite and during events to deepen relationships and encourage renewals and upgrades.
Membership Stewardship and Special Events
  • With assistance of the Development Events team, plan and execute members-only events, such as:
    • Birthnight Supper and Ball
    • National George Washington Birthday Auction
    • Members’ After Hours, including the Neighborhood Friends Picnic
    • Members’ Holiday Receptions
  • Ensure high-quality event experiences that promote loyalty and appreciation among members.
  • Manage the Neighborhood Friends Steering Committee.
  • Serve as a liaison to coordinate member-related experiences.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise two part-time Membership Associates.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, scheduling, and oversight for all onsite membership sales activities.
  • Train Membership Associates to deliver exceptional concierge-level service and to effectively promote the value of membership.
  • Monitor performance and provide ongoing coaching and feedback to ensure goals and service standards are met.
  • Coordinate staffing schedules to ensure consistent coverage at key onsite locations and during special events.
  • Support professional development and team cohesion through regular check-ins and team meetings.
  • Ensure associates have the necessary tools, materials, and support to successfully engage with guests and promote membership.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Nonprofit Management, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in membership management, development, or customer engagement, preferably within a nonprofit or cultural organization.
  • Demonstrated success in managing membership programs, including acquisition, renewals, and stewardship.
  • Strong supervisory skills with experience managing part-time or frontline staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adept at managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in CRM/database management systems (e.g., Raiser’s Edge, Tessitura, or similar).
  • A passion for American history and the mission of George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
Work Environment & Requirements:
  • This position requires some evening and weekend hours for events and member engagement activities.
  • This position is on-site with no remote work option, although flexible hours can be accommodated for after-hours and weekend events.
  • Ability to work onsite and interact with members and guests in a dynamic, historic setting.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods during events.
