Description
POSITION TITLE: Pro Bono Front-End PWA Developer – Audio-Guided Payment Kiosk (Haiti Solar Initiative)
ORGANIZATION TYPE: Non-Profit / International Development & Renewable Energy
EMPLOYMENT / POSITION TYPE: Pro Bono / Volunteer (Project-Based)
LOCATION: Remote (Flexible Hours)
DURATION & TIME COMMITMENT: 3–4 Weeks | ~15–20 Hours Total (~4–5 Hours/Week)
COMPENSATION: Volunteer / Unpaid Pro Bono (Portfolio Build & Social Impact)
JOB CATEGORY: Information Technology / Software & Web Development / International Relief
ABOUT THE PROJECT & MISSION
We are deploying 200-Watt modular solar hubs across rural communal sections in Haiti to provide off-grid solar power, satellite internet, and access to essential services. To support local micro-finance borrowers, we are launching "Kès Pèman"—a touchscreen cash loan-repayment app running on budget Android tablets at off-grid solar kiosks.
Because many rural borrowers have varying literacy levels, the app uses visual Haitian Gourde currency graphics, large touch targets, and pre-recorded Haitian Creole voice prompts (.mp3) instead of dense text. Furthermore, because satellite and cellular connectivity in remote mountain communes can be intermittent, the app operates on a 100% offline-first architecture, caching cash transactions locally in IndexedDB and automatically syncing with payment servers when the signal returns.
POSITION SUMMARY
We seek a skilled Pro Bono Front-End Developer to assemble pre-scoped modules (HTML5/JS, React, Vue, or Flutter) into a functional, full-screen Progressive Web App (PWA).
All backend specs, wireframes, UI graphics, Haitian Creole .mp3 audio files, offline database scripts, and mock REST API endpoints have already been created and prepared for immediate developer integration.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE OF WORK
Touch Interface Development: Assemble a touch-friendly single-page layout (landscape mode) optimized for budget Android tablets.
Camera QR Scanner: Connect tablet camera hardware to scan borrower QR codes and load mock loan profiles.
Audio & Visual Input Logic: Wire currency button taps (100, 250, 500, 1,000 HTG) to update running totals on screen and trigger corresponding Haitian Creole .mp3 voice prompts.
Offline-First PWA Setup: Implement a Service Worker (Cache-First strategy) to store all HTML, CSS, JS, bill images, and audio assets for 100% offline execution.
IndexedDB Offline Queue: Integrate a local transaction queue using IndexedDB to store payment payloads during network outages, with auto-sync listeners when internet connectivity is restored.
Full-Screen Manifest: Configure manifest.json and viewport locks (user-scalable=no, full-screen kiosk display).
Code Hand-Off: Deliver clean, commented source code to a designated GitHub repository along with a brief 1-page deployment guide.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Front-End Development: 2+ years of experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), React, Vue, or Flutter.
Asynchronous Web & REST APIs: Proficiency using fetch / Axios to format and send JSON payloads to REST APIs.
Media Handling: Familiarity with browser HTML5 Audio APIs and camera hardware integration (WebRTC or HTML5 QR libraries).
Version Control: Experience using Git and GitHub for project delivery.
PWA / Offline Awareness (Plus): Basic understanding of Service Workers, IndexedDB, or Progressive Web Apps is preferred.
DAY-ONE PROVIDED ASSETS
We respect your volunteer time and will provide complete starter assets prior to your kickoff:
1. Audio Directory: Pre-recorded Haitian Creole .mp3 files for all bill values, confirmation prompts, and system alerts.
2. Visual Assets: High-resolution PNG graphics of Haitian Gourde notes (100, 250, 500, 1,000 HTG).
3. Pre-Written Code Modules: Starter scripts for the Service Worker cache (sw.js), IndexedDB sync engine (offline-db.js), and Web App Manifest (manifest.json).
4. API Endpoint & Credentials: Mock REST API endpoint URLs and test JSON payload formats.
5. Remote Hardware Access: Remote access (via AnyDesk/TeamViewer) to a test Android tablet if physical testing is needed.
PROJECT MILESTONES
Week 1: Review starter assets, establish GitHub repo, build single-page touch layout & QR scanner.
Week 2: Integrate .mp3 audio triggers for bill taps, configure Service Worker cache, and wire IndexedDB offline queue.
Week 3: Connect submit flow to mock REST API, perform connection-drop testing (offline queueing & auto-sync).
Week 4: Verify manifest.json full-screen kiosk execution on tablet and complete GitHub code hand-off.
