Description
Executive Director
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Indiana seeks a strategic leader to serve as executive director during a defining era for civil liberties and civil rights. Based in Indianapolis and offering a hybrid schedule, this position has an anticipated start date in summer 2026.
As the state’s premier defender of individual rights and one of 54 affiliates of the national ACLU, the Indiana affiliate has championed justice with courage and conviction for over 70 years. A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that does not accept government funding, it is supported by more than 30,000 members, a $4 million budget, 19 staff members, and a dedicated team of volunteers and interns.
Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director defines and implements the organization’s strategic vision, ensures long-term financial sustainability, and drives mission impact. Serving as the primary ambassador and spokesperson, they elevate the organization’s profile and cultivate critical external partnerships. Internally, the executive director oversees all core activities—including litigation, policy, advocacy, fundraising, and communications—while fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture. They lead a senior management team comprising the legal director, director of finance and operations, director of philanthropy, communications manager, advocacy manager, and lobbyist.
Salary Range: $172,000 to $200,000
Qualifications
This role requires proven executive experience, high emotional intelligence, and the fortitude to navigate a complex political landscape. The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of strategy and execution, possesses a strong record of managing people and programs in complex organizations, and serves as a clear, trusted voice for justice. Basic qualifications include at least ten years of relevant leadership experience and a bachelor’s degree; an advanced degree is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and leadership experience will be considered.
