Abortion in America is seeking a Director of Development to lead our fundraising efforts. This is a vital position at the heart of our mission to harness the truth of lived experience to reclaim power and build public support for reproductive freedom.
About Abortion in America:
Abortion in America (AIA) is a national effort to lift up the experiences of people affected by post-Roe abortion bans and other restrictive laws.
We have three core priorities:
- Documenting and sharing personal testimonials.
- Supporting storytellers.
- Driving change through grassroots organizing, strategic partnerships, and Amplify Legal’s litigation practice.
The Role:
As Director of Development, you will serve as AIA’s fundraising leader, building and executing a comprehensive development program that fuels our mission. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this position is responsible for the full portfolio of fundraising activities, from cultivating principal and major gift donors to securing institutional funding and building sustainable pipelines at the community and mid-level giving tiers. The Director of Development will work closely with the Executive Director and Board to develop funding priorities, encourage a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, and build the internal infrastructure necessary for long-term fundraising success. The ideal candidate is a self-directed, strategic thinker and a strong writer who thrives in a lean environment, brings creativity and rigor to donor engagement, and is deeply committed to reproductive justice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish short- and long-term development goals, strategies, and metrics that secure diversified financial support from individuals and institutional funders
- Manage and own a personal portfolio of principal and major gift donors and prospects through frequent, personalized engagement across all phases of the moves management cycle
- Direct and manage the Executive Director's portfolio of major donors and prospects by creating tailored cultivation strategies, drafting correspondence, and preparing written proposals to ensure consistent engagement
- Direct institutional fundraising efforts, including writing compelling grant proposals and reports and maintaining a calendar of funder deadlines and relationships
- Develop and grow community and mid-level giving programs, including annual appeals, online fundraising, and new revenue stream strategies
- Build a donor-centric stewardship program that adheres to best practices and deepens relationships with current supporters while attracting new stakeholders
- Work with donors to leverage the full array of giving methods, including current and deferred/planned giving
- Support and partner with the Executive Director and Board members on all major fundraising initiatives, ensuring consistent communication of the fundraising strategy to maximize volunteer leadership engagement and participation
- Leverage organizational visibility to advance fundraising results through cultivation events, partnerships, and strategic follow-up
- Consistently input moves management updates, meeting debriefs, donor notes, and research into the fundraising database; utilize and optimize the database to track all aspects of the giving cycle and provide regular reporting on fundraising initiatives
- Serve as a senior leader for the organization, contributing to strategy and key decisions
- Manage and maintain CRM tool with forecasting tools, working in collaboration with fiscal sponsor and AIA staff
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience as a development professional with a proven track record of building sustainable, high-performing fundraising programs
- Demonstrated history of successfully cultivating and personally soliciting major and planned gifts from high net worth individuals and institutional funders
- Strong grant writing and reporting skills with documented foundation funding success
- Background and proven success working with Board members on personal giving and engagement with fundraising initiatives
- Knowledge of strategic planning, donor acquisition, research, engagement, stewardship, reporting, and overall development management
- Understanding of small-dollar fundraising strategy a plus
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
- Flexible and adaptable working style with the ability to positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
- Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
- Ability to work independently with limited administrative support while embodying an all-hands-on-deck approach
- Proficiency with donor databases and fundraising CRMs
- High energy and passion for reproductive justice and the organization's mission is essential
- Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and emotional intelligence
Compensation & Benefits:
This position reports to the Chief of Staff, Abortion In America. This is an exempt position with an annual salary of $135,000-$155,000
Comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment
