Position Summary
GMA seeks a Director of Communications and Marketing to lead the firm’s communications and brand efforts in support of thoughtful, relationship-driven growth. This part time leadership role reports to the Co-Managing Director of Strategy. The Director will shape how GMA shows up in the field by clarifying our voice, strengthening our reputation, and enabling colleagues to represent the firm with confidence and consistency.
The Director is responsible for translating strategic priorities into communications and relationship-building practices that increase visibility, deepen connections, and support lead development. The Director collaborates across the firm to strengthen GMA’s outreach and visibility while ensuring clear, consistent messaging and approaches.
This is a hands-on role—leading strategy and producing core communications, and supporting the firm’s revenue goals by strengthening GMA’s reputation and relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Leadership
• Partner with the Co-Managing Directors to develop and implement a communications and marketing strategy
• Contribute as a member of the leadership team to firm-wide priorities
• Establish clear processes that support consistent, high-quality communications, outreach, and follow-up
• Guide GMA’s approach to relationship-driven growth by aligning visibility, outreach, and follow-up to support a steady pipeline of conversations
• Maintain the firm’s relationship and visibility map, working with colleagues to ensure focus, follow-through, and accountability for outreach and engagement
• Identify and pursue opportunities for visibility, including speaking engagements, partnerships, and convenings aligned with GMA’s priorities
Brand & Messaging
• Steward GMA’s brand, including voice, messaging, and visual identity
• Ensure consistency across client communications, proposals, website content, and external presence
• Articulate GMA’s value for prospective clients, partners, and peers
• Write emails and other communications for firm leadership to customize and send
• Contribute to and coordinate the development of proposals and marketing materials, ensuring clear messaging aligned with GMA’s value proposition and priorities
Content & Channels
• Lead development of content that engages key audiences and supports growth
• Establish a more consistent approach to email communications, LinkedIn presence, and event promotion and follow-up
• Identify opportunities to tell GMA’s story and highlight impact
• Oversee planning for a future website refresh
Events & Field Engagement
• Support communications strategy for GMA-hosted events and pooled funds
• Ensure events are leveraged for visibility, relationship-building, and follow-up
• Help colleagues turn visibility and relationships into ongoing connection
Team Leadership & Support
• Guide the communications work of one or two foundation assistants or program associates
• Provide coaching, tools, and guidance to support effective networking, outreach, and follow-up
• Build internal capacity for authentic, consistent external presence
Measurement & Improvement
• Maintain simple systems for tracking contacts, relationships, and outreach activity to support continuity and follow-through
• Track engagement using practical metrics and use insights to refine approach over time
Qualifications
Background & Experience
Required
• Bachelor’s degree and 7–10 years of experience in communications, marketing, or related roles; or master’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field, and 4–5 years of relevant experience
• Experience developing and implementing communications or outreach strategies
• Experience supporting business development in a relationship-based organization, including writing proposals or other client-facing materials
Preferred
• Experience in philanthropy, nonprofit consulting, or professional services
• Experience with brand development or website strategy
• Experience coaching or mentoring colleagues
Skills & Attributes

• Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong attention to detail
• Ability to collaborate across teams and influence without direct authority
• Interest in and commitment to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector
• Commitment to an inclusive culture
Preferred
• Familiarity with LinkedIn for professional visibility and thought leadership
• Proficiency with digital communications tools and platforms (e.g., email marketing, CRM, social media)
• Familiarity with contact and relationship management tools
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $63,000—$69,000 for this three-day-per-week position ($105,000-$115,000 full-time equivalent).

Work Environment
This is a part-time (three days/week), exempt position based in Boston office with a hybrid work schedule, including at two days in our Boston office weekly to start, with the ability to occasionally reduce to one as responsibilities allow. Typical work hours are 9am to 5pm, with flexibility in scheduling as appropriate.
The position may require occasional early morning or evening meetings, limited weekend commitments, and periodic travel for site visits, client meetings, and educational programs. A valid drivers’ license or the ability to travel by public transportation is required.
