Title: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Reports to: The Board of Directors
Status: Exempt
Rate: $250-$300k DOE + discretionary bonus
This position may be eligible for a one-time relocation stipend to assist with moving costs to the Ventura County Area.
Location: Camarillo, California
Overview:
The CEO is responsible to the Board of Directors for management of the entire nonprofit organization including programs, fundraising/development, finances, strategic planning, human resources, community relations, and communications. The CEO is the organization's primary liaison with the Board of Directors, community leaders, local community organizations and governmental agencies
Agency Overview:
Interface Children & Family Services is a nonprofit agency dedicated to providing comprehensive services to children and families. With approximately 140 full-time equivalent employees and 175 total headcount, Interface operates multiple programs across various locations serving our community's most vulnerable populations.
Interfce's revenue is diverse, comprised of approximately 25% federal funding, 25% state funding, 25% county government contracts, and 25% from other non-governmental contracts and fundraising activities. This funding diversity requires experienced community engagement, and sophisticated cost allocation and compliance capabilities to meet varied funder requirements while maintaining operational efficiency.
Duties:
Essential responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:
General Management:
- Successfully manage the overall administration of all programs, activities, and services of the organization, in accordance with the highest standards and practices of contemporary nonprofit management.
- Implement all policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for recruitment, hiring, professional development, and evaluation of the organization's employees and directly responsible for the Officers Team, which consists of five officers overseeing 30 distinct programs across seven core programs Create and maintain a working environment that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse team of top quality staff and volunteers. Uphold, regularly review, and ensure compliance with Interface's Employee Handbook, contractual relationships, and performance expectations.
- Oversee the development, maintenance, and monitoring all of the organization’s administrative and fiscal systems including the annual operating budget. Ensure that an independent annual audit and all financial activities and reports are conducted in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices and standards and the organization is in full compliance with all federal, state and local laws.
- Responsible for management, development, oversight, engagement, and community involvement opportunities for the organization's volunteer support system including the recruitment and development of the organization's Board of Directors and any of the organization's advisory councils.
Leadership Development:
- Serve as the primary liaison between the organization and the Board of Directors. Ensure that the Board of Directors is kept fully informed about the condition of the organization and all-important factors influencing it with particular emphasis on program and financial integrity and accountability. Provide the full Board and committees of the Board with adequate information and recommendations for policy development and programs that further the goals and objectives of the organization.
- Assist the Board of Directors in identifying key issues and opportunities presented to the organization.
- Establish and maintain sound and cooperative working relationships with other social service providers, government entities, community groups, and organizations.
- Ensure contract compliance with all funded programs.
Fund Development:
- Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its mission. Set priorities and monitor attainment of fund development goals. Ensure the financial stability of the organization through the development of multiple and highly diversified funding sources including: individual and corporate contributions, foundation grants, special events, deferred giving, government contracts, and fee for services. Funding opportunities should also include the cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
- Ensure there are appropriate systems to track donor activities and ensure that all pledges are collected in a timely manner. Develop and implement appropriate donor communications and recognition programs
Planning:
- In cooperation with the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteer leadership, develop and execute a long range strategic plan, with a goal of achieving the organization's mission. The strategic plan should include and be consistent with program and organizational components and policies that are approved and authorized by the Board of Directors. The strategic plan should also include the development and implementation of a fundraising plan and calendar of events that support the organization's long-range goals.
- Initiate regular review of all programs, services, and staff to assure viability of the organization and responsiveness to current community needs. As needed, recommend and develop programs and services that are necessary in order for the organization to meet its stated objectives and the community's needs.
Community Relations:
- Demonstrate a genuine and active interest in the community through involvement with other community organizations, funding sources, and governmental agencies.
- Develop and implement ways to market the organization and promote awareness of and support for the organization within the community.
- Represent the organization at meetings and activities on a local, state, and national level.
CEO Characteristics:
The Interface Board of Directors strongly believes that the executive leadership of Interface is one of the most critical factors influencing its’ success or failure as a community-based organization. The CEO must wear many hats and demonstrate multiple talents. For an organization as unique and multi-faceted as Interface, the CEO requires a broad range of competencies and personal attributes. Therefore, the CEO must: be a leader, be very intelligent and capable of demonstrating appropriate authority in the face of interpersonal and/or organizational challenges, demonstrate strong fundraising skills, be good with people, and demonstrate a collaborative/partner nature. The CEO should also be knowledgeable about the field of social services. The CEO must also demonstrate confidence in the organization's mission/vision and have the passion to carry it through. An inclusive leadership style is expected. Integrity, credibility, and influence rather than using a position for power is a required characteristic. The CEO should also demonstrate multicultural sensitivity and awareness. Specific job qualifications include:
Qualifications:
- 7-10 years of progressive responsibility in senior management in a multi-purpose nonprofit, healthcare, corporate, and/or government organization is required. CEO-level experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing a multi-faceted direct service nonprofit social services organization or equivalent is preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to community service.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and build strong administrative and programmatic infrastructures.
- Demonstrated success in fund development of all kinds is a key attribute of this position.
- Positive leadership skills coupled with responsibility over direct financial profit and loss at the organizational or department level, solid fiscal administration and multi-project management skills are a must.
- Demonstrated educational and work experiences relative to the job requirements is required.
- Demonstrated experience working with a Board of Directors, corporate and governmental leadership, and community organizations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
Specific clearances required under state law for employees working with children:
Successful background and criminal clearance required and maintained, including but not limited to California Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, Child Abuse Index and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Proof of a valid California Driver’s License, reliable transportation, proof of automobile insurance (listed as covered), pass and maintain driving approval as required by our insurer.
