Description

Beyond Housing is a nationally recognized community development organization dedicated to strengthening families and transforming our under-resourced communities to create a stronger, more prosperous St. Louis, once and for all.

The Beyond Housing Academy is a newly launched multi-year economic mobility initiative for families who are ready to build a stronger future. Instead of addressing housing, employment, finances, health, and family needs though separate programs, the Academy brings them together into one coordinated journey building around each family’s goals.

Families progress through six stages, beginning with stability, then strengthening finances, growing career and educational opportunities, supporting family well-being, building wealth, and ultimately creating a legacy for the next generation. Each family receives individualized coaching, an Academy Progress Plan, and connections that give families more choices for their future.

Position Summary:

Academy Advisors serve as each family’s primary guide through the Beyond Housing Academy.

Every family follows the same six-stage curriculum, but families may move at different speeds and need different levels of coaching and support. Academy Advisors build trusted relationships, help families understand and apply what they are learning, identify barriers, coordinate resources, track progress, and maintain clear expectations.

This is not a traditional case-management or referral position. Academy Advisors must be strong critical thinkers who can understand a family’s full situation, help families make sound decisions, and identify the best path forward.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build a trusted, respectful, and consistent relationship with each assigned family.
  • Help families understand the Academy, its six stages, participation expectations, and next steps.
  • Guide families through enrollment, required forms, releases, assessments, and documentation without making the process feel like another burden.
  • Meet regularly with families to review progress, discuss barriers, and agree on clear next steps.
  • Help families understand and apply Academy lessons in their everyday lives.
  • Provide practical education and coaching related to budgeting, banking, credit, debt, savings, benefits, and financial decision-making.
  • Identify the root causes of barriers and determine when a family needs coaching, additional support, a specialized resource, or a direct accountability conversation.
  • Coordinate services and opportunities from Beyond Housing staff, Academy faculty, community partners, and other specialists.
  • Track participation, commitments, milestones, barriers, and family progress accurately and consistently.
  • Address missed commitments or stalled progress directly, respectfully, and constructively.
  • Recognize issues that require specialized financial, legal, health, or professional expertise and make appropriate referrals.
  • Participate in staff training, case consultation, team meetings, and ongoing improvement of the Academy.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Experience in financial coaching, workforce development, education, community development, family support, human services, or a related field.
  • Strong critical-thinking, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with people from different backgrounds and circumstances.
  • Practical knowledge of household budgeting, banking, credit, debt, savings, benefits, and basic asset-building strategies.
  • Ability to ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, and identify what may be preventing progress.
  • Strong follow-through, organization, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple people and resources around a family’s needs.
  • Comfortable using technology and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to protect confidential family information.
  • Willingness to have direct and sometimes difficult conversations.
  • A sincere belief in families’ ability to grow, paired with a willingness to hold people to clear commitments.

Salary and Benefits:

  • 55,000.00-65,000.00 per year
  • Benefits for full-time position as determined in the current Beyond Housing Employee Handbook.

Success in This Role:

Success means families know their Advisor, understand where they are in the Academy, remain engaged, receive coordinated support, apply what they learn, address barriers, and make measurable progress through the Academy’s stages.

Academy Advisors do not do everything for families. They help families build the knowledge, skills, habits, relationships, and confidence to move forward with increasing independence.
