Youth Programs Coordinator

The Thomas Cole National Historic site is now seeking a full-time Youth Programs Coordinator. They will be a key member of the museum staff and will work across the Education department to build sustainable relationships with schools, and youth audiences. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in museum programming, and be comfortable multi-tasking while maintaining attention to detail and quality. The position requires strong problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills. This is a full time, Monday through Friday position. In addition, special projects/events may take place on weekends. Reports to both Manager of Visitor Engagement + Director of External Relations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Oversee multi-year project to create online experience for youth audiences
  • Design educational experiences for school groups – groups that visit the Site, and off-site visits to schools
  • Design educational experience for youth audiences
  • Conduct research using primary sources and archival collections to create content for lesson plans, online experiences, programming, etc.
  • Teach lesson plans/activities to students, both during on-site visits and by making trips to school classrooms
  • Nurture newly formed relationships with schools and other youth organizations and develop new ones.
  • Explore new ways to connect with schools and youth audiences, such as leading certified professional development sessions, and creating a youth council.
  • Regularly meet with teachers and administrators to discuss broadly and in detail, best ways to become more involved in local schools
  • Maintain the Education tab on the TCNHS website
  • Create new programs and interpretive elements for children and families visiting the Site
  • Stay up to date on current theories of childhood education and museum interpretation
  • Lead group tours around the Site that consist primarily of children or students
  • Become a trained educator and provide support within touring operations, approximately two days per week, with the potential for more during busy weeks
  • Seek and secure repeat yearly funding for school buses
  • Create and maintain a record system that summarizes relationship with schools/educators.
  • Periodically train other site educators about how best to engage younger students, and how to lead lesson plans in classrooms and on site
  • Work with the Director of External Relations to make updates to the website, assist with social media and email blasts, and draft grant narrative reports
