Purpose:

The Director, People & Culture will be the functional lead for all people and culture initiatives at Tides Advocacy. This strategic leader will be responsible for designing and implementing human resources best practices, effectively leading a high-performance HR team and cultivate a sense of belonging for every employee in a productive, equitable and inclusive workplace that ultimately supports the mission and vision of Tides Advocacy.

The Director, People & Culture will be a business partner, advisor and confidante to the Chief Executive Officer and her leadership team. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, strong-willed, and passionate leader with executive presence and an uncanny ability to persuade, influence and inspire people. The Director, People & Culture must be confident and comfortable with navigating a fast-paced and sometimes intense environment with high demands, managing ambiguity, and delivering tough messages or unpopular decisions. The Director must be innovative and flexible, able to “understand the big picture” and create plans that map how to accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives. An intellectually curious and passionate person who isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo will thrive in this environment.

The Director, People & Culture will be based at Tides Advocacy office in San Francisco, CA and have two direct reports: HR Manager, HR Specialist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the organization's human resources team and human capital.
  • Evaluates and advises on the impact of long-term planning of new programs/strategies and regulatory action as those items affect the attraction, motivation, development and retention of the people resources of the organization
  • Brings new and innovative ideas, people policy changes and new programs that will enhance the organizational culture and the employee experience
  • Designs and implements talent management model, which includes talent acquisition, talent development and succession planning
  • Designs and administers progressive, competitive and cost-efficient benefit programs.
  • Designs and implements organization’s labor relations strategy
  • Partners with the HR team for all complex and senior level recruiting, employee relations matters and legal issues to mitigate organizational risk
  • Ensure the Tides Advocacy compensation philosophy, strategies and practices are aligned with market data and competitively position the organization to recruit and retain top talent.
  • Oversees and leads management training initiatives and provides coaching as needed
  • Maintains a continuous improvement mindset and makes process improvement recommendations to the executive team

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field; Master’s degree and/or PHR or SPHR certification a plus
  • 10-15 years of experience in an HR leadership generalist capacity
  • Prior labor relations experience in a unionized work environment a plus
  • Previous experience developing and implementing progressive HR strategies
  • Demonstrated success in driving employee engagement and culture transformation initiatives
  • Strong background with leading recruiting strategies
  • Strong knowledge of employment and labor laws
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrates strong emotional intelligence
  • Professional demeanor, positive communication, and works effectively with a team
  • Excellent communication, influencing, persuasion and engagement skills
  •   The ability to gather and synthesize information that suggests new possibilities
  •   A drive to improve the organization by attracting and developing talent
  •   The capacity to engage in broad, complex analytical and conceptual thinking
  •   Makes good strategic and tactical decisions based on a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience   and judgment
  •  Excellent project management, analytical and budgeting skills
  •  Ability to manage relationships, communicate with senior levels of management
