ORGANIZATION

Founded in 2002, Transgender Law Center (TLC) is the largest national trans-led organization advocating self-determination for all people. Grounded in legal expertise and committed to racial justice, TLC employs a variety of community-driven strategies to keep transgender and gender nonconforming people alive, thriving, and fighting for liberation. TLC is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022.

TLC’s experienced development team and consultant grant writer helps sustain a budget of $5+M, funding all TLC programs and initiatives. Foundations are currently the largest part of our budget by far, at 53% (32% Individual + Events; 4% Corporate; 11% Government and Other). The work of the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving was previously held by the Executive Director. Your role will largely collaborate with our consultant grant writer, Director of Development, and Director of Finance and Operations. You will also work with our Executive Director, program staff, and Development team (4 full time staff including Director) as needed. As TLC celebrates its 20th anniversary, you may also support as needed in anniversary events and fundraising campaigns.

POSITION SUMMARY

Your role is primarily to renew and grow institutional support with a focus on private foundations; and additionally support our growing corporate relations as needed (led by the Director of Development).

You will gain a deep understanding of TLC’s programmatic work. You will consistently look for where to improve fundraising from foundations, identifying new prospects including family foundations and untapped philanthropic areas. You are encouraged to take ownership in this role and come up with ideas to support TLC’s organizational growth.

What You’ll Do

  • Set foundation strategy: Partner with the Executive Director and Development Director to create a strategic annual fund development plan including budget projections to support annual revenue goals.

  • Build external relationships and represent the organization: Develop and maintain close working relationships with the philanthropic community and institutional funders. Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for TLC's mission and programs around the country.
  • Grow institutional support: Lead and partner with the Executive Director and Development Director in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of foundation grants and corporate contributions. Build and sustain a pipeline of prospective funders by researching and identifying new grant prospects.
  • Manage the overall grants process: Assist our consultant Grant Writer with writing persuasive proposals and reports for foundations, and support Director of Development on pitch decks for corporations. Manage the grant submission process, including collection and synthesis of data, completion of proposals, tracking, reporting, and corresponding with foundation and corporate donors. Coordinate collecting information as needed from our Director of Finance and Operations, Executive Director, and relevant Program staff.
  • Ensure effective data tracking and systems: Ensure excellent donor and gift record-keeping, processing, and acknowledgement with support of development administrative staff. Maintain grants calendar for use by Finance, Development, Grant Writer, and Executive Director. Utilize Salesforce to create to inform data-driven projections and planning for institutional funders.

Who You Are

  • An Experienced Fundraiser: You’re equipped with 5+ years of experience managing and growing and personally prospecting, cultivating, and soliciting foundations and corporations for support, with successful results.

  • An Excellent Communicator. Superior verbal, written and communication skills with proven experience and judgement in crafting proposals and other funder correspondence. Adept at communicating clearly with staff in all departments and levels of an organization.
  • A Systems Person.  You’re skilled at detailed planning, and keeping yourself on track with multiple deadlines per week, while honoring the org's commitment to work-life balance for all staff (including this position).
  • Commitment to Social Justice. You’re committed to a career with impact and aligned with TLC’s mission and vision. You bring knowledge of transgender and gender nonconforming communities and issues, and an intersectional analysis informed by disability, economic, racial, social, and gender justice values.

Bonus if you are:

  • Familiar with Salesforce.
  • Familiar with the CA/national LGBTQ/trans/social justice funder landscape.
  • Familiar with key transgender advocacy organizations, leaders, and movements nationally.
