Description

Overview

Accountability is a critical job for any nonprofit seeking funds from the public.  That is why development departments at most progressive, program-focused nonprofits rely heavily on their finance teams to ensure that the funds they receive are accounted for, tracked, and allocated appropriately. This is not a challenge everyone enjoys, but if you are someone who takes pleasure in ticking and tying funds to accounts, balancing the books, and making the overall process easier to follow and understand for nonfinancial people, we’d like to talk with you about our Revenue and Grants Senior Accountant position.

If you have had several years of experience in a nonprofit managing revenue and grants, have a desire to work independently, but contribute to the overall success of our team, we hope you will consider applying for our Revenue and Grants Senior Accountant position with Friends of the Earth.  The position is located in our Washington, DC Headquarters. We are looking for an individual who has:

  • Served as a lead in revising and reestablishing current revenue and grant recording processes
  • Ensured the accuracy of financial data and mitigating risk related to grant reporting
  • Supported the redesign of accounting processes and controls across the accounting department
  • Experience in meeting the overall goals and objectives of a busy nonprofit accounting department

Who We Are

First of all, you need to know more about us. Friends of the Earth is working for a more healthy and just world. We understand that the challenges facing our planet call for more than half measures, so we push for the reforms that are needed, not merely the ones that are politically easy. Our mission is to change the perception of the public, media and policy makers – and effect policy change – with impactful, well-reasoned policy analysis and advocacy campaigns that protect people and the planet. This hard-hitting advocacy has been the key to our successful campaigns over our four-plus decades in operation.  Our programs address a wide range of domestic and international issues as they relate to the environment, including but not limited to: climate and energy, food and agriculture, oceans and water, economic policy and democracy reform.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

You are joining our team at a very important time.  First of all, we are closing our fiscal year, opening our new fiscal year, and last but not least preparing for an audit.  To say that we have a lot to do is understating how much we have to do and the time frames in which we have to do it.  We are looking for a team player with an unsinkable positive attitude who can throw themselves immediately into the work and make an obvious difference right away.  Currently, we are a small team and your role is extremely important to our success. Your contributions will have an immediate impact on our operations and the work-life balance of the entire team.

Managing Revenue – Our development team is very successful and as finance, we need to grow along side them, supporting them in keeping track of the funds they raise.  You will be responsible for:

  • Directly responsible for all incoming revenue related transactions in the GL
  • Download weekly reports from various revenue streamlines and prepare a JE to record revenue based on its restriction level
  • Produce weekly revenue related reports highlighting any large donation, grants and pledges
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of accounting vs development data, adjusting any revenue categories as needed
  • Establish a close working relationship with development staff to accurately record revenue per the budget, resolving any variances in data between fundraising and accounting software
  • Reconcile all cash accounts on a monthly-basis; work closely with Financial Analyst in competing cash reconciliations at month-end
  • Work closely with AP staff on resolving any cash reconciliation related transactions
  • Lead revenue-related section during annual financial audit, completing all appropriate schedules and providing direct support to the audit team on revenue related items

Managing Grant Funding – In 2018, we have made a major investment in our grants operation.  As a result, we are winning more grants than we have before.  This is good news but creates a bigger need for finance to do more to support their efforts.  You will be responsible for:

  • Directly responsible for all grant-related activities for the organization, providing input to development staff on GAAP rules and regulations on grant recording and pledges receivables
  • Establish and implement a system to record all TRNA (Temporary Restricted Net Assets) for the organization, organizing data based on various campaigns and restriction levels
  • Review and provide input on grant proposals to team leaders prior to submission
  • Monitor grant expenditures monthly to ensure over/under spending, addressing any adjustments required prior to the grant period
  • Prepare any ad-hoc reports requested by staff on analyzing all grant-related transactions
  • Assist Financial Analyst in completing monthly TRNA schedule providing any supporting documentations and preparing adjusting journal entries as requested
  • Maintain an accurate grant book for each fiscal year, making sure all supporting documentations are included for each incoming grant
  • Prepare accurate and timely grant reports for grantors; provide financial overview on the grant’s status to the team leaders prior to grant report submission

Other duties include:

  • Produce all accounts receivables/invoices for the organization
  • Any other accounting related tasks to ensure accounting produces accurate financial statements
  • May be asked to work on newly created projects throughout the year
  • Update revenue section(s) of Accounting policy and procedure manual on a regular basis

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with non-profit and multi-company accounting.

  • Ability to engage in redesigning accounting processes and controls across the accounting department
  • Able to focus on accuracy of financial data and mitigating risk related to grant reporting
  • Proficient at using excel and revenue/ accounts receivables modules of accounting software
  • Able to lead in revising and reestablishing current revenue and grant recording processes
  • Positive attitude is a must in approaching any situation and/or staff
  • Being able to work independently and even more importantly, in a team environment
  • Understand and provide support to meet overall goals and objectives of accounting department
