Description

The Springfield Museums, located in Springfield, MA has an immediate opening for the newly created position of Project Manager.  The qualified candidate should be highly motived with a passion for science and a desire to support the initiatives and continued growth and success of the Springfield Science Museum.  He/she will be responsible for ensuring the creation of the conceptual design, development, content, planning, organization, execution, and monitoring for the design/redesign of gallery spaces, exhibitions and other related programs.  This position reports to the Director of the Science Museum.

Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Recommend gallery and exhibition design and themes according to established policies. Execute plans once they are approved by the Director of the Science Museum.  Assist in the development of curatorial content for galleries and exhibitions.
  • Serve as the point person - coordinate, motivate, and monitor staff and outside vendors in the development, delivery and installation/reinstallation of galleries and exhibitions; assure quality control throughout each project, define the project scope, goals, timelines, schedule, and budget; ensure benchmarks and deadlines are met and that collaboration and information is shared amongst staff.
  • Act as the staff liaison, maintain ongoing communication with contractors, outside vendors, etc. Schedule and lead meetings, advise on strategies, policies, and compliance associated with projects. Manage changes in project scope, schedule, and costs, reporting on project progress and communicating changes to the Director of the Science Museum, staff, vendors and, as appropriate, committee members.
  • Ensure maintenance of the galleries and exhibitions including computer and audio/visual equipment, seeking assistance from the Technical Support Specialist, preparators, facilities staff, and others as necessary.
  • Meet with the Education department to plan programming opportunities. Plan, develop, organize and present various education programs as they relate to galleries, exhibitions and programs. Provide training of new or reinstalled galleries, exhibitions, and programs to the Education staff and the docents.
  • Present lectures/seminars to various groups; may teach adult courses sponsored by the Museum; assist and/or advise other staff members on matters related to exhibitions/programs.
  • Assist the Science Museum Director with the development and maintenance of a long-range plan with strategic directions consistent with Springfield Museums’ mission, purpose, goals and objectives. Long-range plans reflect analysis of activities and anticipate and project trends; key issues and contingencies are identified and articulated ensuring stability of these areas with the Science Museum and the Springfield Museums.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of physical sciences. Keep abreast of trends, significant advances through professional associations, publications, seminars and similar means, to realize recognizable benefits to the Science Museum and the Springfield Museums Corporation.  Serve as a resource for scholars, scientists, educators, other museum personnel, and the public on matters relating to physical science.  Present lectures to various community groups; give presentations at professional meetings.
  • Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate, or as assigned by the Director of the Science Museum.

Qualifications include, but are not limited to: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Science (a Master’s degree is preferred), along with three to five years of related experience in project and/or program management is required. Prior curatorial or teaching experience in the field of Science along with project management experience will be considered.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across diverse constituencies is necessary; proven leadership and problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is essential. Experience in developing and managing programs and budgets, attention to detail, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required
  • The ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and climb ladders is necessary. Some evening and/or weekend hours may be required.
