Description

The Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) fights for structural change at the local, state, and national levels to attain racial justice, build community wealth, and realize a just transition to a 100% renewable energy future. We mobilize Long Islanders through political education, grassroots organizing, leadership development, and the creation of cooperative economic institutions to redistribute wealth and power. 

LIPC has a long history of organizing and building power across Long Island since 1979. We are creating a new position for an Organizing Director who will help us win big on our issues, develop and support staff, board members and the general membership. They will build a bold vision around community organizing in achieving transformative change, and will have the ability to build a team of skilled staff and community leaders who will implement this vision. The organizing director will also ensure that LIPC achieves its organizing goals in the field by supervising, training and developing the skills of organizing staff and members. 

Roles:

  • Provide regular supervision, coaching support and guidance to the staff to succeed in their work and create a sustainable and thriving work culture. 
  • Identify professional and personal growth goals and training, including ongoing support for staff to meet those goals.
  • Identify and help implement new tools for membership tracking, peer to peer texting, utilizing VAN and other voter activation software, scheduling software and other critical tools for the work. 
  • Create and lead the staff in team building activities and relationship building. 
  • Work with the Executive Director and Board to implement and create  organizational tools and systems for staff and members to align their work and to create successful teams.
  • Oversee the hiring and onboarding  of new organizing staff when needed. 
  • Work with organizing staff to create, identify, and conduct political education activities for LIPC volunteers and members. 
  • Represent LIPC in key alliances, coalitions, and at strategic conferences, gatherings, and in the media.
  • Take on special organizing projects and administrative roles to fill in gaps when necessary. 
  • Work with the Executive Director on reporting organizational activities for grant reporting. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in grassroots community organizing, legislative campaigning, or electoral campaigning (volunteer or paid).
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to social, economic and racial justice.   
  • Genuine enthusiasm to support the organizers and staff; and for motivating and involving our members in the different community organizing activities. 
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal skills and communications skills. 
  • Ability to work in a team, as well as to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire.  
  • Experience in campaign development and implementation.  
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent organizational skills and leads with thoughtful decision making practices. 
  • Experience using and implementing tools such as VAN and peer to peer texting programs preferred. 

Preference will be given to:

  • Candidates who have lived experience within the communities that we aim to serve under social, racial, and economic justice.
  • Those who have knowledge of or experience in working for a membership organization.
  • Candidates with fluency in a language other than English. While this is not required, our goal is to be as accessible as possible to communities across Long Island, and we value the cultural lens that someone fluent in more than one language can provide.

Terms of Employment: Position is a full-time position with health, retirement, vacation, and pension. The salary range for this position is $72,000 - $82,000 based on experience. We offer competitive compensation, relative to experience. This position will report to the Executive Director.
